Miranda Throckmorton Takes First Career Sprint Car Checkered Flags
CLERMONT, Ind. (May 20, 2007) -- Improving every week was one of the major goals that fifteen-year old Avon High School freshman Miranda Throckmorton set for herself and her sprint car team at the beginning of the season. Saturday night, she took a giant leap towards that goal when she took her first career checkered flag in a sprint car at Paragon Speedway.
By virtue of winning her heat race from the sixth starting position, Throckmorton had a chance to re-draw for starting position in the A-Main event. Luck was on her side, as she pulled the one pill, which allowed her to start on the pole position for the event and she never looked back.
"During the first half of the race, the bottom of the track was dry-slick," commented Throckmorton. "As the race kept going, I saw that the top of the track was rubbering-up, so I went up to the top, and my car just took off."
Running at Bloomington Speedway on Fridays and Paragon Speedway on Saturdays, Throckmorton has been forcing herself to run high so that she can get used to running on the cushion.
"My car is always faster on top, I just need to get comfortable up there," continued Throckmorton. "We've been waiting for this win for a long time, and we really should have won last week but we didn't."
Throckmorton is the first female to win a non-winged 410 sprint car event in the state of Indiana, not to mention being the first female to win a sprint car feature at Paragon Speedway
Throckmorton knows that getting laps and racing against the veterans are the keys to her improvement in her Chalk Chassis with Snyder Enterprise power. With teammate Geoff Dodge, Throckmorton now has a driver close to her that she can rely upon for the typical questions that a young sprint car driver has.
"He's (Dodge) raced at Indy (Indianapolis Motor Speedway), Knoxville and some other great racetracks, so it's been nice having him as a teammate," said Throckmorton.
