Cannon Makes ASCS History with Inaugural Mid-Atlantic Win

NEWBERRYTOWN, Penn. (April 22, 2007) - Pat Cannon, 28, of Etters, Pa., wanted to use the American Sprint Car Series as a way to gain national exposure.

He did it in a big way Sunday night, when he led the entire 20-lap ASCS Mid-Atlantic Regional race at Susquehanna Speedway Park and scored the first sanctioned-series race held in Central Pennsylvania.

"It is really cool to get this first ASCS win at Susquehanna Speedway Park," Cannon said. "ASCS is a way to get your name out there and that's what we want."

Cannon had a perfect evening, winning his heat race, dash and feature, which paid $1,500.

"That says a lot about this race team," said Cannon, driver of the Zane Highlands-owned No. 3. Highlands was vacationing and unable to attend the ASCS opener.

Cannon started on the pole and beat Chad Layton, a former 410 Sprint Car winner at Susquehanna Speedway Park, into the first turn. Layton fell back by six-car lengths before the second lap was completed.

Layton started to close the gap on the eighth lap, then made it closer as the front runners started to catch lapped traffic.

The first caution came out on the tenth lap when Lucas Wolfe came to a stop on the frontstretch with throttle linkage problems. Another caution came out on the restart after Cody Darrah slid into the outside wall in turn two.

Cannon proceeded to put on a clinic over the final 10 laps, albeit he was helped out when Layton slid high in turn two at the start.

"Starting position meant a lot," Cannon said. "The track was dry, and we got out front fast and kept it."

Cannon defeated Layton, Dave Ely, Davie Franek, Jr., and Jimmy Stitzel. Sixth through 10th went to George Surprick, Justin Barger, Billy Dietrich, Tim Hogue and Todd Rittenhouse Jr.

Cannon and Franek won heat races for 19 cars. Cannon also won the dash.
