Wright romps in O'Reilly ASCS action at Little Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 21, 2003) - Gary Wright put on a driving clinic in Saturday night's 30-lap O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour feature presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and United Trailers at I-30 Speedway.
Rebounding in strong fashion from mechanical problems the previous night, Wright flawlessly sliced through lapped traffic for much of the race, leaving only five cars on the lead lap as the checkered flag flew. The victory aboard the Salina-powered Southwest Express/The Shop/Richwood Construction Maxim marked a series' best fifth triumph of the season for Wright, and brought his career ASCS National Tour win total to 66.
After winning the evening's opening heat race from the fifth position, Wright led the feature field to the green flag with Travis Rilat alongside. Wright jumped into the lead as action got underway, and following a pair of cautions for Rick Behr and A.G. Rains in the opening five rounds, proceeded to blister the field in convincing manner.
As Rilat fought off Zach Chappell for second in the early rounds, Wright established a near straightway lead by the tenth round as lapped traffic came into play. Lapped traffic did little to deter Wright's rapid pace, as he built the lead to nearly half a lap by the midway point, when Pete Butler slipped around Chappell for third.
While Wright masterfully worked through lapped traffic over the remainder of the race, Rilat and current I-30 Speedway point leader Butler battled for the runner-up slot. Wright took the checkered flag just as he lapped sixth-place runner Cody Branchcomb, a full straightaway ahead of Rilat, who held off Butler for the runner-up position. Chappell claimed fourth, with Jason Martin racing from 12th to round out the top five.
Branchcomb ran a solid sixth, just ahead of Ernie Ainsworth, who posted his second strong run in as many nights by finishing seventh. Utilizing a provisional starting position after a wild flip down the backstretch in the opening heat, current series point leader Darren Stewart earned the race's Hard Charger award by racing from 21st to finish eighth. Bryce Vowan was ninth, with Justin Sturch completing the top ten.
Wright, Chappell, Butler and Branchcomb claimed heat race victories for the 29-car field, with Rick Behr racing from ninth to win the 12-lap B Feature.
After tagging the frontstretch wall and flipping while trying to chase down Branchcomb in the fourth heat, Tim Crawley flipped again in the B Main when the throttle stuck entering turns three and four while dicing for the lead. Crawley was uninjured.
