Abbottstown, PA, 6/14/03 - Lancaster's Doug Esh threaded his way through some early-race crashes and held off a charging Lance Dewease to claim his second win of the season Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway.
Originally slated for a seventh starting spot, Esh restarted third when half of the field was involved in two separate crashes on turns one and two at the start. Esh was side-by-side with Glenndon Forsythe at the start-finish line at the completion of lap one and was credited with the lead when a second-lap red came out for Craig Smith, who rolled after tangling with Chappy Knaack on turn one. That proved to be the race-winning pass.
Though Esh led the rest of the way, he had to dive under the lapped car of Michael Markey to hold onto the top spot as he and a closing Dewease went through turns three and four the final time. Esh's final margin of victory was 1.26 seconds over Dewease, who lost ground on the top side in the final turns.
"We were good. I just can't say enough about the team. We had a bad crash last Friday night, and this is the same car," said Esh in victory lane after his traditional wing dance on top of the Leach family Diversified Machine/C.W. Fritz Company #30, "I knew we were pretty good and we got a good break when we restarted third. I saw Cris (Eash) was there, and one of my buddies down in the corner was telling me 'Turn it up...turn it up.' I looked up at the scoreboard and saw the #77. I saw his nose, and I thought, 'If I get by that lapped car and get in on the bottom, I probably have a good shot at holding him off.' Lance is awesome...one of the best drivers out here. It's nice to have him finish behind you, knowing you've raced good cars."
"We were sitting over there under that red, and you have Rahmer and Eash lined up behind you. I thought it was a blessing that Lance was out, but sure enough, he comes out and gets behind me anyway."
Dewease had come from the rear after spinning out while battling with Fred Rahmer for the runner-up spot on lap eight. That caution quickly turned to red when six cars tangled on the backstretch a quarter of-a-lap behind, sending Greg Hodnett over the backstretch catch fence and onto the back of a pickup truck. The crash injured a spectator on the bed of the pickup, who was given emergency treatment and transported to Hershey Medical Center by helicopter. The victim's condition was unknown at the end of the night's racing action.
Hodnett, Markey (who ended up on his side), and the four other drivers involved in the crash were uninjured, but both Hodnett and Forsythe were done for the night.
Rahmer assumed second for the restart, but suffered a flat right front tire and pulled into the pits for a tire-change during a tenth-lap caution for Chris Knopp on turns one and two. Rahmer returned to action, but pulled into the pits during a 16th lap caution with a flat right rear. He did not return.
Three-time '03 Lincoln winner Cris Eash assumed second when Rahmer went to the pits on lap ten, lost a spot when he got out of shape on turn four of lap 13, reclaimed the spot on lap 14, yielded to Dewease on lap 20, then slowed and pulled into the infield on lap 22.
Bobby Weaver, who started second after the first-lap melee, ran in the top five the whole way and crossed third. Niki Young and Brook Weibley completed the top five, with Josh Wells, Jim Siegel, Knaack, Billy Sims, and Brian Leppo rounding out the top ten.
Heats for the 28 sprinters on hand were won by Dewease, Smith, and Forsythe, with Markey winning the consolation.
Dewease, Lincoln's 410 sprint points leader, settled for second in the 410 race, but charged from his 20th starting spot to win the 25-lap URC sprint car feature. Dewease squeezed under Trevor Lewis in heavy lapped traffic to grab the lead in turns three and four. He went on to win by 2.11 seconds over Lewis, who assumed the top spot when Justin Collett spun while leading on turn four of the second lap.
Lewis settled for second, with Jason Clauss, Billy Brian, Jr., and Tim Hogue completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were points leader Kevin Welsh, Curt Michael (who started 23rd), Dave Ely, George Suprick, and Randy West.
Heats for the 34 URC sprinters were won by Suprick, Pete Green, Hogue, and West. Mike Haggenbottom won the B-Main.
Pasadena, Maryland's Mike Ciezobka led wire-to-wire to claim his first career Lincoln win in the 20-lap thundercar feature. Ciezobka started second, grabbed the lead from polesitter Jim Martz, Jr. in the first two turns, and held off Neil Smith in a one-lap shootout following a 19th-lap caution for Al Cramer on the front stretch. Smith tried a banzai move in the final turns, gave Ciezobka room on the top, and traded paint the whole way to the finish line before coming up a half car length short.
Nat Tuckey, Craig Wagaman (who came from 24th starting spot), and Martz completed the top five.
Heats for the 24 thundercars were won by Ciezobka, Steve Clabaugh, and Martz.
Next Saturday night, June 21st, it will be the rescheduled MANHEIM AUTO AUCTION NIGHT. The Cindy Rowe Paintless Dent Removal 410 Sprints and Thundercars will be joined by the Silver Spring Limited Late Models. In addition, there will be Big Wheel races for the kids.
Gates will open at 5:30 PM, with warm-ups at 7 PM, and the first heat taking the green at 7:30 PM.
