ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 5/13/00 - Neither heavy rain, nor an uncharacteristically dry track, or even heavy lapped traffic can stop him. Maybe no one had any kryptonite.
After heavy rains delayed the start of the evening's racing program for nearly an hour and a half, Salfordville's Fred Rahmer passed race-long leader Curt Michael on the backstretch of the seventh lap for the lead and then darted through heavy lapped traffic for nearly the entire final 17 non-stop laps to register his fourth win of the year in the 25-lap super sprint feature Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway.
"I'll tell you, I don't think I've ever saw the track slicker," said Rahmer upon exiting his sprint car in victory lane, "Out in our heat race, I thought it was raining because I was wheel-spinning so much...but Moon and Richie and the guys changed the car around and it was pretty good. It needs to be better, but it was good enough to do it tonight, and that's all you come for."
The original start to the feature was red-flagged when Gregg Klarr and Larry Shive tangled entering the first turn. Shive, who flipped his sprinter hard up against the outside wall, was shaken and taken to the infield care center for observation and released.
On the complete restart, third-place starter Michael shot into the lead past polesitter Pat Cooper and outside frontrow starter Chris Knopp. Michael led Cooper and fourth-starting Brook Weibley when the first caution waved on the third lap for a spinning John Garrett.
Weibley then moved past Cooper for second on the restart and began to pressure Michael for the lead when the caution waved again on the sixth lap.
But lurking in third for the restart was Rahmer, who had shot to the highside of the track to get to the front.
"I walked the track before the feature and it looked like the top would be the place to get to the front," said Rahmer on his run to the checkered, "There was a wet strip around there and I didn't know how long it was going to last. I sure came to win, and we wanted to do it, so I just gassed her up the best I could."
Immediately on the restart, Rahmer shot around Weibley for the runner-up spot and quickly closed on the leader. Rahmer then made his race-winning move around Michael on the backstretch of the seventh lap, with Weibley getting by Michael for second a lap later.
The race's final caution waved on the ninth lap with Rahmer leading Weibley and seventh-starting Danny Jones.
Rahmer was able to pull out to a 1.54 second lead by the 10th lap, as Jones moved around Weibley for second. Rahmer then took his Al Hamilton-owned, Manheim Auto Auction No.77 into heavy lapped traffic on the 13th lap, and carefully picked his way through then remaining 17 non-stop laps to the checkered 3.34 seconds ahead of Jones for his fourth win of the year at Lincoln, and his eighth overall win of 2000. The win, worth $2,500, was his 88th career win at the Pigeon Hills oval.
"I'm just happy to win here or anywhere in Central Pennsylvania," Rahmer added. "I'm glad everybody stuck it out tonight...we had a nice crowd and I hope they enjoyed the show."
"I want to wish all the Moms a happy Mothers Day, especially my wife and I hope everybody has a great day tomorrow."
Jones fought back the challenges of Johnny Mackison Jr. over the final laps for second. Mackison had to settle for third, with Steve Siegel fourth and Dave Ely fifth. Completing the top 10 were Jeff Rohrbaugh, Weibley, Jesse Wentz, Michael, and Jimmy McBee.
Heats for the 24 super sprints on hand were won by Ely, Cooper, and Michael.
Doug Esh pulled pill number two, grabbed the lead at the outset, and led every lap in the 20-lap 358 sprint feature. It was his second win in as many 358 features at Lincoln this year, and came by 1.76 seconds over T.J. Stutts. Danny Jones (new driver of the Strausbaugh #88), Chad Layton, and Eric Stambaugh completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Jake Raudabaugh (who started 18th), Jimmy Layton (who started 23rd), Billy Dietrich, Billy Albright, and Todd Reed. Darren Eash came from 15th starting spot to challenge Esh for the lead on a 17-lap restart, only to hit the outside wall on the second turn and coast to a stop to end his run in the fourth turn.
Heats for the 45 "358" sprints on hand were won by Jones, Chad Layton, Joe Ilg, and Dan Dietrich. Twin consolation events were won by Kevin McNew and Raudabaugh.
Neil Smith became the first repeat winner in nine races in the 15-lap thundercar feature. Smith, who was slated to start third, ended up on the pole after front row starters Ken Berwager spun and M.R. Teal was penalize for helping Berwager around. Smith followed fellow front row starter Cork Laughman for one lap before making the pass and leading the rest of the way. Laughman dogged Smith the rest of the way to finish second, with Mike Zeigler coming from 14th to finish third, Duane Hahn fourth, and Nat Tuckey fifth. A multi-car battle for fourth lasted for most of the feature, with the spot changing several times every lap.
Heats for the 27 thundercars on hand were won by Bobby Rudisill, Teal, and Smith, with Greg Feltch winning the consolation.
Next Saturday night, May 20th, it will be the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown (ARCH) Night at Lincoln Speedway featuring another triple-header show of super sprints, 358 sprints, and thundercars. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 p.m., and then followed by heats at 7 p.m.
