ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 9/11/99 - Former super sprint champion Dan Dietrich closed out the comeback chapter of his racing career with a win in the 358 sprint car championship event at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night.

Dietrich, seriously injured in a 1996 crash that led to his first retirement from the sport, claimed his first Lincoln win since 1995. The victory earned Dietrich the $1,000 top prize.

Dietrich started third in the 25-lap feature and slipped around pole-sitter and race-long leader Joe Ilg in the third and fourth turns of lap eight to grab the lead. Over the final stages of the race, Dietrich had to hold off 1999 358 champ Terry Leininger, who advanced from his 11th starting spot to finish second. Dietrich’s win appeared in doubt when the caution flew for Gary Gollub, who came to a stop on the second turn on lap 20. Leininger made a charge at Dietrich on the restart, running him up to the outside guardrail on turn four of lap 22. But Dietrich hung on against the fourth turn cushion and raced to a .91-second win.

And in the battle for the Lincoln Speedway 358 Sprint Track Championship, Leininger overcame a 25 point deficit to Greg Leiby in the final point race of the season to claim the track championship by 45 points by virtue of his second place finish - coupled with Leiby’s eighth-place finish. Leininger finished with 2,965 points to Leiby’s 2,220 points.

Steve Siegel, driving the second Leach Racing Team #30, advanced from his fifth starting spot to finish third, with Kevin McNew and Ilg completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Chad Layton, Jake Raudabaugh, Leiby, Mike Lehman, and Tim Hershey.

358 Sprint heats were won by Bob Camilli, Leiby and Ilg, with Eric Patteson winning the consolation. Fast time in time trials over the 32-car field was set by Mike Lehman with a one-lap time of 14.781 seconds.

New Oxford’s Ray Bull, making his first 1999 Lincoln start at his hometown track, claimed the ARDC midget feature event, passing Ed Stimely, Jr. on a 13th lap restart and leading the second half of the race. The restart was for A.J. Ernesto, who spun while battling Stimely for the lead on the second turn. Stimely’s lead was short-lived, lasting only the frontstretch of lap 13. Stimely stayed with Bull the rest of the way, but was unable to set up for a pass. Mark Freeland, winner of the wingless midget show at Lincoln a few weeks back, ran third to Bull and Stimely from lap 13 on. Bull’s final margin of victory was .56 seconds. Walt Stearly and Kevin Bastian completed the top five.

ARDC Midgets heats were won by Ernesto, Donnie Trent and Stimley, Jr.

Rookie driver Bobby Rudisill of New Oxford raced to his first career win in the 15-lap thundercar feature. He drove under race-long leader Corey Knaub of York on the backstretch of the 11th lap to claim the win. Nat Tuckey crossed second in a five-car battle for the runner-up spot over the last several laps, with Knaub holding on for third, David Prunkl fourth, and K.T. Shaw fifth.

Thundercar heats were won by Prunkl, Mike Zeigler Jr., Knaub and Duane Watson. Twin consolations were won by Bob Scott Jr. and Matt Barnes.

Miller Brothers Chevrolet/Oldsmobile and Delco Signs teamed up to present Manufacturers’ Appreciation Night for the thundercars, with more than $17,000 in prizes and merchandise presented to the 24 starters and first two alternates.
