Mother Nature scores third win in-a-row.
Late week rains, slow thawing, and wet grounds put northeast season opener on hold one more week.
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 3/6/03 - Hopes were high this week in getting the Northeast Season Opener in at Lincoln Speedway. But Mother Nature just didn't cooperate - in time.
Late week snow and rain, coupled with marsh-like conditions all around the speedway have forced Lincoln Speedway promoters Don & Bob Leiby, along with Alan Kreitzer, to postpone the 2003 season lid-lifter one more week.
"We could have gotten the track ready and shoveled the remaining snow from the grandstands," said co-promoter Don Leiby. "But the ground is so saturated with water right now that any type of foot or car traffic would have completely tore it up...we would have had a huge mess to clean up in the parking lot and in the speedway grounds."
It's a shame because the weather looks to be coming around for Saturday. But it was just a little too late for drying things up. We felt it would be best to wait one more week."
With that said, the Northeast Season Opener featuring the Ice Breaker 30 for the 410 Sprints and the Spring Thaw 20 for the Thundercars will now be held next Saturday afternoon, March 15th at 2 PM.
Also on the racing card will be the originally scheduled Northeast Classic Stock Cars. So now the season opening race will not only be the first three division show of the season, but it will be the final afternoon race of 2003.
Then in two weeks, Saturday, March 22nd, Lincoln will switch to 6 PM starts with the other regular Lincoln point division - the 358 Sprints - joining the action for there first event of 2003 at the Pigeon Hills oval.
So keep your fingers crossed and don't forget to change your calendar now to Saturday, March 15, 2003 for Lincoln Speedway's Northeast Season Opener featuring the 410 sprints and the thundercars. Gates will open at noon, with hot laps getting underway at 1:30 PM, and the first heat taking the green at 2 PM.
