Abbottstown, PA (April 3, 1999) - Jeff Shepard won his fourth career victory at Lincoln Speedway tonight, taking home the $2,500 winner's share of the purse.

"Well I didn't think I could win there for a while," said a jubilant Jeff Shepard from victory lane. "We've been struggling so bad for the last two months. I'm not saying today is like a turn around point, but I sure guarantee it helps.

"I would say it's probably the driver," said Shepard when asked about the team's recent streak of bad luck. "I'm the driver, I'm the mechanic, I'm every other thing, so I'm just going to blame it on the driver tonight."

Shepard deserves more credit than blame tonight after holding off a late race challenge from Greg Hodnett. Hodnett started ninth but quickly moved up to the front, following Shepard who started two rows ahead.

"I'm just glad we got the sixth starting spot," said Shepard. "We've had nothing but bad luck, turning over twice at the Grove in two weeks. A starting spot is everything. As good as Hodnett was, if we had started behind him, I don't think we'd a got him."

Don Kreitz Jr. took the early lead from his outside front row starting position. He led the first six laps before fading to a fourth place finish.

A mid race intermission lasted ten minutes while Lincoln Speedway officials removed Shane Smith's No. 00 sprinter from between the turn one wall and the fence.

Shepard's full straight away lead was erased when Smith stepped over the turn one wall. But three lapped cars separated him from Hodnett on the restart. That was enough to provide Shepard with an eight car-length lead by the time Hodnett cleared lapped traffic.

Hodnett, who had Fred Rahmer all over his rear bumper in the waning laps, reeled in Shepard with three laps to go. The trio sliced their way through traffic with Shepard leading the way to the checkered flag.

"Here we've been working our butts off the whole time trying to get his thing to go around the race track," said Shepard. "It was close. I know somebody got underneath me in that lapped traffic."

"It was hairy but we made it through it."
