Kevin Thomas Jr. Showing Talent Early in Sprint Car Career
By: Brock Williamson
Tampa, FL -- Kevin Thomas Jr., from Cullman, Alabama, is showing skill and talent way beyond what a typical 15 year old race driver should possess, especially in an 800 horsepower Sprint Car. In his debut in the Hoosier Midwest Sprint Car Series at Western Kentucky Speedway, Kevin brought home a 12th place finish after running in the top-10 all night. In only a handful of starts Kevin has delivered two top-five feature finishes, including a 2nd at Vermillion County Speedway, and has finished top-20 or better in each feature he has participated in -- not bad for a rookie.
Other drivers have made note of the young driver's ability, including Sprint Car veteran Casey Shuman who made the following comment to Kevin after a recent race, "I will race with you anytime. You raced me hard and clean - as good as a lot of guys with 10-20 years experience." This after the two put on a show for the fans while battling for position at Vermillion County Speedway.
Young Kevin has received advice and racing tips from Bernie Stuebgen, former crew chief for Tony Stewart Motorsports. "Kevin has shown car control and an experience level equal to guys running sprint cars for ten years or more. The ironic part is that he only has five starts, said Bernie. A few weeks ago he had the crowd at Tri States Speedway in Haubstadt, IN on their feet cheering after a slide job exhibition was put on for numerous laps, with Kevin coming out on top. After the race, crew chief Bernie Stuebgen greeted him with a smile and high five, letting young Kevin know how awesome he had just performed.
Kevin Thomas Jr. has been racing in a variety of sports, in numerous divisions since 1999, including this season in the Hoosier Midwest Sprint Car Series - it continues with Kevin Jr. making his USAC debut at Lawrenceburg Speedway on July 12, 2008.
