New Zealand Champion Kerry Jones Enters Kele World Challenge Dash

KNOXVILLE, IOWA (JULY 4, 2001) - History will be made at this year's Amoco Ultimate Knoxville Nationals as seven-time and defending New Zealand sprint car champion Kerry Jones of Waiuku, South Auckland, has officially entered the Nationals and it's premier international race, the Kele World Challenge Dash. Jones, who qualified for the $10,000-to-win dash at his home track of Western Springs Speedway, will be competing at Knoxville in his K&N Interchange Equipment/Auto Meter/Elf Lubricants number 1 NZ Mopar-powered Harris chassis sprinter. Never before in the forty- year history of the Knoxville Nationals has a competitor come from the southern hemisphere island nation of New Zealand.

The biggest challenge to Jones will be adapting to the 'big half-mile' dirt oval at the Marion County Fairgrounds, although he raced last year at the similarly-configured Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio. Providing his car arrives on shore as scheduled, Jones intends to compete at Knoxville on Saturday, July 21, the track's inaugural 1200-Pound Nationals on July 27-28, and finally on Casey's General Stores Night, August 4. Other recent Kele World Challenge Dash entries have been filed by American Chad Kemenah and Australians Max Dumesny, Peter Murphy and Kerry Madsen. Max will also use the occasion to receive his Australian National Sprintcar Poll "Driver of the Year", "Team of the Year" and "Wild Card Award" plaques. Most of the international competitors are expected to be present at the Kele World Challenge Cook-Out on the fairgrounds in Knoxville on Tuesday, August 10.
