Stewart Steals the Spotlight with O'Reilly ASCS Hollywood Hills Sweep
SAN FELIPE PUEBLO, N.M. (July 3, 2004) - Darren Stewart raced to his second O'Reilly American Sprint Car Series National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers feature victory in as many nights, leading wire-to-wire in Saturday night's 25-lapper to complete a sweep of the Hollywood Hills Speedway double.
Stewart snared the lead from the outset then survived a pair of caution periods along the way to record his sixth career O'Reilly ASCS National Tour victory aboard the Ostrich Powered Sparks Construction No. 91 Eagle by five car-lengths over Gary Wright.
After winning Friday night's preliminary feature, Stewart led the feature field to the green flag with Wright alongside. Stewart jumped into the early lead and paced the opening four rounds before the first caution flew for John Jacob's disabled mount off the backstretch.
Back under way, Stewart continued to set the pace with Wright in pursuit, as Jason Martin overtook Toby Brown for third. With the leader battling through heavy lapped traffic just past the midway point, Martin challenged Wright for second until clipping a turn one infield tire and spinning to a halt with front end damage with 15 laps in the books.
Wright tried to mount a charge on Stewart in the closing laps, but Stewart held the low line successfully to secure the checkered flag. Wright extended his series point lead to ten markers over third place finisher Travis Rilat, while Eric Miller led the ASCS Rocky Mountain Region forces across the line with a fourth place run. Brown posted his second top-five finish in as many nights by crossing the stripe in fifth.
Zach Chappell claimed sixth, with Patrick Bourke advancing from 17th to finish seventh. Nick Haygood was eighth, with Rickey Hood and Garry Lee Maier completing the top ten.
ASCS Rocky Mountain Region shoe Jake Pierson earned the race's Hard Charger award by racing from 24th to finish eleventh.
