Estes Wins Over Heart O' Texas ASCS Gulf South Foes
WACO, Tex. (June 18, 2004) - Claud Estes scored his first career American Sprint Car Series victory by topping Friday night's 25-lap Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores ASCS Gulf South Region feature in front of a packed house at Heart O' Texas Speedway.
After starting eighth, Estes slipped around leader Tony Bruce, Jr., on the 21st round en route to a six car-length victory aboard the H.D. Miller No. 74e Eagle, besting a sturdy 36-car field.
Ray Allen Kulhanek and Jerry Bell led the 22-car feature field to the green flag and battled for the point over the first 14 rounds, surviving several cautions along the way. After Todd Johnson's lap 14 spin, Kulhanek and Bell tangled exiting turn four while dicing for the point, sliding to a wild stop on the front straightaway.
Kansas shoe Bruce took over the lead and set the pace the next six rounds before Estes took command. Estes slipped away in the final rounds and took the checkered flag in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Bruce settled for second, with 11th-starter Chris Sweeney claiming the show position. Kevin Ramey, who jumped the cushion on the 16th lap after charging from 15th to third, recovered to cross the stripe in fourth, with Sam Hafertepe, Jr., racing from 13th to round out the top five.
Eric Payne finished sixth, while Jason Martin rebounded from a four-car tangle on lap six to take the checkered flag in seventh. Greg Rilat assumed the series point lead with his eighth place finish, as 16th-starter Brandon Corn and 19th-starter Stephen Chevallier completed the top ten.
Kulhanek, Martin, Clevenger and Estes topped heat race action, with Ramey and Corn splitting victory honors in the twin 12-lap B Mains.
