Gray garners ASCS Gulf south loot at Union Hill

Lonnie Wheatley, ASCS - UNION HILL, Lou. (May 25, 2003) - Terry Gray slipped around Scottie McDonald on a restart then raced to victory lane in Sunday night's American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region feature at Thunder Valley Speedway.

A.J. Weaver, who kicked off the evening by establishing a new track record of 12.84 seconds in qualifying, led the feature field to the green flag with defending series champion Kelly Angelette alongside. After the initial start was waved off for a tangle that eliminated Todd Johnson, Jamie Will and Cody Pearson, Weaver outgunned Angelette to grab the early lead.

Third-starter Michael Dupuy battled Weaver for the point in the opening rounds until Dupuy spun after lap three contact, relegating him to the rear of the field. Weaver continued to set the pace until jumping the turn two cushion after six rounds and tagging the wall.

Angelette took over on the restart with Gray and McDonald in tow. After the trio battled for the point for several rounds, McDonald briefly took command before Angelette charged back into the lead. Angelette suffered a broken brake caliper soon after however, putting McDonald in command.

Gray slipped underneath McDonald on the restart, as McDonald then spun in turn two. Gray proceeded to race to the checkered flag aboard the Wesmar-powered Wendy's J&J with a straightaway advantage over Greg Rilat. Shane Morgan claimed the show position, with leading ASCS Gulf South Region Rookie contender Sam Hafertepe, Jr., racing from 18th to claim fourth. Ray Allen Kulhanek rounded out the top five, with 20th-starter John Pate, Mark Harrison, Brandon Berryman, Rod Craddock and McDonald completing the top ten.

Angelette, Berryman, Johnson and Kulhanek topped heat race action for the 32-car field, with Tony Krites winning the B Feature.

Rilat's runner-up showing moved him into a tie for the series point lead with Angelette, as Johnson and Hafertepe are both within ten points of the leaders.
