TWO IN TEXAS ON TAP FOR ASCS GULF SOUTH REGION

TULSA, Okla. (May 19, 2008) -- Veteran series contender Greg Rilat could reach a milestone mark when the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region takes to a pair of Texas ovals over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

On Saturday night, a $2,000 winner's share is up for grabs as the ASCS Gulf South Region invades the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX, for the Fifth Annual Memorial Day Classic. Then on Sunday night, the series moves on to Waco's Heart O' Texas Speedway for the Fifth Annual Gordon Woolley Classic.

And with a pair of main event starts over the weekend, three-time series runner-up Rilat could become the first driver in ASCS history to make 100 feature starts within one Regional tour.

The Texas City, TX, shoe enters the weekend with 98 career ASCS Gulf South Region feature starts in the series' history of 106 events. Perhaps more importantly, Rilat is once again in the championship mix after finishing sixth or better in final points since the series' inception in 2002.

Rilat enters the weekend double ranked fourth in points, 34 points off of Chris Sweeney's lead pace. Hailing from Channelview, TX, Sweeney holds a narrow eight-point lead over 2006 series champion Gary Watson as he vies for his first series championship.

Closing in on the lead duo of Sweeney and Watson is 17-year-old Channin Tankersley of Highlands, TX. Tankersley is just 24 points out of the lead after a pair of recent series wins.

Defending series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, has climbed up to fifth following a May 10 win at Houston Raceway Park, with the balance of the top ten including rookie shoe Travis Elliott, Brandon Corn, Tommy Bryant, Travis Knighton and Terry Monroe.

Saturday's action at Gator Motorplex goes green at 7:00 p.m., with Sunday's event at Heart O' Texas Speedway firing off at 8:00 p.m.

The high-banked, 0x00bc-mile Gator Motorplex red clay oval is located in Willis, TX, off I-45 Exit 98 (Shepherd Hill exit), then east, then 1.4 miles south on SR 75. For more information, contact the track at 936-588-6127.

The semi-banked, 1/3-mile Heart O' Texas Speedway clay oval is located in Waco, TX, off I-35 Exit 343, then 0.6 miles north on east frontage road. For more information, contact the track at 254-829-2294.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 26 nights of racing action at eleven different tracks throughout Texas and Louisiana in 2008.
