TULSA, Okla. (June 19, 2006) -- A pair of southeast Texas clay ovals are next on the slate for the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region, with the series in action this Friday and Saturday night.

The series makes its first stop of the season at the high-banked, 0x00bc-mile Motorama Speedway gumbo clay oval in Beaumont, TX, on Friday night for the annual John Bankston-Glenn English Memorial Race, then moves on to Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night.

Vying for his first series championship, Texas City, TX, racer Greg Rilat leads the way into the weekend. After a third place Gulf South ranking in 2004 and a runner-up finish last year, Rilat leads this year's championship points chase by just 18 markers entering the weekend double.

Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, is a close second, with Beaumont's Gary Watson just twelve more points back in third. Lane Whittington, a Saturday night Gulf South winner at Pike County Speedway, is a close fourth, with defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Conroe, TX, just 81 points out of the lead in fifth.

The balance of the current top ten entering the weekend includes Larry Hartwell (Pasadena, TX), 15-year-old Rookie contender Channin Tankersley (Highlands, TX), Jason Johnson (Eunice, LA), Michael Herrington (Gonzales, LA) and Stephen Chevallier (Downsville, LA).

Friday's card at Motorama Speedway fires off at 8:00 p.m., with Saturday's action slated to go green at 7:30 p.m.
