South Texas Double Looms for ASCS Gulf South Region
TULSA, Okla. (June 19, 2006) -- A pair of southeast Texas clay ovals are next on the slate for the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region, with the series in action this Friday and Saturday night.
The series makes its first stop of the season at the high-banked, 0x00bc-mile Motorama Speedway gumbo clay oval in Beaumont, TX, on Friday night for the annual John Bankston-Glenn English Memorial Race, then moves on to Houston Raceway Park on Saturday night.
Vying for his first series championship, Texas City, TX, racer Greg Rilat leads the way into the weekend. After a third place Gulf South ranking in 2004 and a runner-up finish last year, Rilat leads this year's championship points chase by just 18 markers entering the weekend double.
Chris Sweeney of Channelview, TX, is a close second, with Beaumont's Gary Watson just twelve more points back in third. Lane Whittington, a Saturday night Gulf South winner at Pike County Speedway, is a close fourth, with defending series champion Ray Allen Kulhanek of Conroe, TX, just 81 points out of the lead in fifth.
The balance of the current top ten entering the weekend includes Larry Hartwell (Pasadena, TX), 15-year-old Rookie contender Channin Tankersley (Highlands, TX), Jason Johnson (Eunice, LA), Michael Herrington (Gonzales, LA) and Stephen Chevallier (Downsville, LA).
Friday's card at Motorama Speedway fires off at 8:00 p.m., with Saturday's action slated to go green at 7:30 p.m.

The 2006 ASCS Gulf South Regional schedule consists of 22 events at ten different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.
In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
