ASCS Gulf South Set for South Texas Double
TULSA, Okla. (June 13, 2005) -- Somebody could be prepared to solidly step out front in the fierce Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region championship points battle over the course of this weekend's South Texas double. But the question is, who will it be?
A mere eight points separate the top five in series points entering the weekend, with eighth place just 39 points off the lead pace.
The series takes to the high-banked, 0x00bc-mile Motorama Speedway gumbo clay oval on Friday night for the John Bankston-Glenn English Memorial race, before moving on to Houston Raceway Park's high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval for the Ronald Laney Memorial on Saturday night.
Hailing from New Caney, TX, Scottie McDonald sits atop the tightly bunched points race entering the weekend. A Gulf South Region feature winner in April, McDonald holds just a four-point lead over Louisiana's Stephen Chevallier and Texas shoe David Kulhanek, who are tied for second. Just four more points back in a tie for fourth are Lane Whittington (Denham Springs, LA) and Ray Allen Kulhanek (Conroe, TX). Kulhanek scored his first series win in the season opener on March 12.
Texans Chris Sweeney and Darryl Wills remain in title contention as well, just 24 points out of the lead, with Greg Rilat in eighth. Teammates Richard Holt and Terry Monroe round out the current top ten entering the weekend.
Friday night's racing action at Motorama Speedway is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m., while Saturday's first green flag at Houston Raceway Park flies at 7:30 p.m.
Motorama Speedway is located in Beaumont, TX, 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90. For more information, contact the track at 409-752-7200 or 409-753-2370.
