ASCS Gulf South Set for Baton Rouge & Pike County
TULSA, Okla. (April 17, 2006) -- The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region fires back into action this weekend with events at Baton Rouge Raceway on Friday night and Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, MS, on Saturday night.
Both events will be run in conjunction with the Southern United Profession Racing (SUPR) sprint car series.Texas shoe Travis Rilat captured the series recent opener at Houston Raceway Park and enters the weekend atop the ASCS Gulf South Region point standings.
Jason Johnson, who suffered burns to both legs when the fuel system malfunctioned in the latter portion of the season opening feature, is expected to be back in action for both ASCS Gulf South Region events this weekend.
Other top ASCS Gulf South Region contenders expected for the weekend include Greg Rilat, Chris Sweeney, Lane Whittington, Stephen Chevallier, Darryl Wills, Brandon Berryman and Larry Hartwell among others.
Defending SUPR champion Michael Herrington, who is currently ranked fourth in ASCS Mid-South Region points following this past weekend's racing action, will lead the SUPR forces into the weekend.
Friday's ASCS Gulf South Region debut atop the 0x00bc-mile, semi-banked Baton Rouge Raceway clay oval is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m.JThe O'Reilly ASCS National Tour recently visited Baton Rouge Raceway for the first time with Missouri's Jesse Hockett taking victory honors.
Saturday's action at Magnolia, Mississippi's 3/8-mile, high-banked Pike County Speedway clay oval also goes green at 8:00 p.m.

The 2006 ASCS Gulf South Region schedule consists of 25 events at ten different tracks throughout Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.
In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
