TULSA, Okla. (June 2, 2008) -- Continuing his pursuit of a first career series title, Chris Sweeney leads the American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region into Saturday night's event at 105 Speedway in Cleveland, TX.

Saturday's card marks the tenth event of the season for the ASCS Gulf South Region and the second stop of the year atop the semi-banked, 0x00bc-mile 105 Speedway clay oval.

Finishing no lower than eleventh through the opening nine features of the season, Channelview, TX, racer Sweeney has extended his series points lead to 36 points over three-time series runner-up Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX.

Sweeney posted his first win of the season and third career Gulf South triumph on May 24 at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, TX, while Rilat made his 100th career Gulf South feature start the following night at Waco's Heart O' Texas Speedway.

Another 26 points back, 17-year-old Channin Tankersley of Highlands, TX, and 2006 ASCS Gulf South champion Gary Watson of Beaumont, TX, are tied for third in points. Tankersley reeled off back-to-back Gulf South wins at Fast Trax Speedway on April 19 and then Golden Triangle Speedway Park on May 9.

Reigning series champion Brandon Berryman of Missouri City, TX, rounds out the current top five in points. Berryman, who posted a win at Houston Raceway Park on May 10, is exactly 100 points off Sweeney's lead pace.

Tommy Bryant of Conroe, TX, is currently ranked sixth, with the balance of the current top ten including rookie shoe Travis Elliott (Alvin, TX), Brandon Corn (Hearne, TX), Terry Monroe (Shreveport, LA) and Travis Knighton (Danbury, TX).

Saturday's card at 105 Speedway fires off at 7:00 p.m.

105 Speedway is located six miles west of US 59 on SR 105, then 0.3 mile north on Fostoria. For more information, contact the track at 281-592-7223.

The ASCS Gulf South Region is set for 24 nights of racing action at ten different tracks throughout Texas and Louisiana in 2008.
