ASCS Gulf South Gears Up for HRP

TULSA, Okla. (September 26, 2005) -- The Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region is ready to roar back into action with this Saturday night's Fourth Annual Gulf Coast Championship event at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX.

-- This Friday night's scheduled Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region event at Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, TX, has been cancelled in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.

With extensive hurricane-related damage at Motorama Speedway, the event will be not be rescheduled.

From Danbury, TX, Ray Allen Kulhanek leads the way into Saturday's card on the strength of five feature wins through sixteen completed Gulf South features this season. Kulhanek's advantage in the championship points race stands at 104 markers over Downsville, LA, racer Stephen Chevallier, with Denham, LA, shoe Lane Whittington just five more points back in third. Greg Rilat of Texas City, TX, is just two more points back in fourth, with New Caney, TX, racer Scottie McDonald rounding out the current top five.

Kulhanek and Whittington have split victory honors at Houston Raceway Park this season. Kulhanek outlasted Chevallier to post the victory on June 17, while Whittington beat Kulhanek to the line to score his first career series win on August 20.

Other top ASCS Gulf South shoes expected for Saturday night's event include Richard Holt, Larry Hartwell, Greg Coleman, Darryl Wills, Chris Sweeney, Terry Monroe and Ty Johnson among others.

Saturday's feature event will include 24 starters, with $1,500 to the winner and $325 to start.

The Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores ASCS Gulf South Region will contest 20 events at ten different tracks throughout Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi in 2005.

In total, including the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour, the Southern Tour and the Sooner, Gulf South, Rocky Mountain and Midwest Regions, the American Sprint Car Series will sanction nearly 100 nights of racing in 2005 at approximately 50 different racetracks throughout 18 different states.
