TULSA, Okla. (September 2, 2003) - The American Sprint Car Series Gulf South Region is set to make its first ever appearance at the high-banked 3/8-mile Battleground Speedway, near Houston, TX, this Saturday night for the John Bankston & Ronald Laney Memorial Race.
Kelly Angelette of Thibodoux, LA, leads the ASCS Gulf South troops into Saturday night's event at Battleground Speedway. After winning the inaugural ASCS Gulf South Region championship last year, Angelette is just three races away from making it two titles in a row.
Angelette enters the event with a 50 point lead over Texas City, TX, shoe Greg Rilat. The veteran Rilat is just four points ahead of Sunnyvale, TX, teen rookie driver Sam Hafertepe, Jr., in the battle for second in points. Hailing from the Houston area, Brandon Berryman is ranked fourth entering the weekend, with Todd Johnson of Eunice, LA, rounding out the current top five.
The leading lady of the ASCS Gulf South Region, Tina Creswell of New Braunfels, TX, is ranked sixth entering the Battleground event, with Cody Pearson, Stephen Chevallier, Chris Sweeney and David Forbis completing the current top ten.
Close to 30 cars are expected for Saturday night's ASCS Gulf South Region debut at Battleground Speedway, which is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m.
