From Victory Lane At Greenwood Valley By Than Mitchell
Open wheel, side-by-side, dirt track racing delivers adrenaline pumping excitement and a high potential for danger, as witnessed last week at The Greenwood Valley Action Track when Joel VanBuskirk and Nyle Berkes tangled on the front straight. In dramatic contrast, Saturday night's Micro Sprint Feature went from green to checkered without incident. Driving the Creveling Excavating sponsored ride, Colby Womer of Mt. Pleasant Mills, made if from the second row to the checkered flag without a caution period. It was a fitting conclusion to the Feature and a racers' thank you to Gerry Creveling who was a too-close observer of last week's crash when Berkes car slammed into the flag stand. Womer thanked the Crevelings, his family and pit crew for standing behind him during a year of bad luck - at least until Saturday night!
Blane Heimbach, Selinsgrove, tried to present a challenge to the leader, but could not get close enough to make a race of it. Third across the line was Wyoming's Joe Bednarski, fourth was Jeff Furlong, Selinsgrove, and Eric Perchak, Hazelton, finished fifth. Charging into sixth position was Jake Park from Rome, seventh was Jason Kemp, Bloomsburg, and eighth place was taken by Nick Lannan, Montoursville. Rounding out the top ten were Skeetz Hockenbrock, Paxinos and Steve Lenig, Selinsgrove.
Ashley Parlett, or Mooch as she prefers to be called, returning to The Action Track from her Wye Mills, MD, home, collected the pole in the heat race, then scored her third win in the Rookie Micro Sprint Feature. The sixteen-year-old hot foot is a highly competent driver and has a strong feeling for her role as a woman in a sport long dominated by men. One more Feature win in the Rookie Division will move Parlett into the Regular Micro ranks. Another long distance traveler and three time Rookie Micro Feature winner, Scott Lawrence, Conklin, NY, placed second. Third was Eric Eckert, Bristol, Scott Miller from Slatington was fourth, and Mortonville's Richie Mitchell was fifth. Ross Perchak, Hazelton came in sixth, while Don Hildebrandt who hails from Nazareth was seventh and Scott Tate from nearby Middleburg was eighth. The final two in the top ten were A.J. Bast, Tower City, and Gary Payne, Bloomsburg.
Gerry Creveling, Action Track owner and flagman, thanked everyone for helping out after he was injured in last weeks accident. Berkes and VanBuskirk, the two drivers involved in the accident, are reported to be fine.
