July 25, 1998 ON VICTORY LANE AT GREENWOOD VALLEY
By Than Mitchell
It was Blaine Heimbach night at the Greenwood Valley Action Track as the 16 year old hot foot won both the Rookie and the Regular Micro Features, back-to-back, driving an RTS Chassis.
In the Rookie Micro Feature Heimbach started in the third row and pulled to the lead early in the race. When he crossed the finish line ahead of the rest of the field, it ended his Rookie career at Greenwood Valley as it was his fourth Feature win; an automatic boot to the Regular Micro ranks. Following Heimbach across the line were Scott Miller, Slatington; Scott Lawrence, Conklin, NY; Ralph Ferraro; Dave Luethe; C.J. Jones, Hellertown; John Gross, Harveys Lake; Billy Graves, Port Crane, NY; Jake Park, Rome, PA and Jim Wehner.
The Main Event at The Action Track had an enhanced purse thanks to CSI 44 Motorsports and Brian Wawroski. CSI (or Commercial Stainless), makers of restaurant equipment in Bloomsburg, sponsors several regular competitors at Greenwood Valley. On Saturday night CSI backed a 44 lap feature race. Divided into two parts, the first 29 laps were run until a yellow was thrown. Five minutes and forty-four seconds were allowed for competitors to adjust their cars before returning to battle the final fifteen lap dash to the finish.
Joe Bednarski of Wyoming led the first 29 laps and was awarded $100 from CSI. To add to the challenge, the first five positions were reordered by a pill pull. Newly promoted Blaine Heimbach drew the pole position for a single-file restart. Only Bednarski was able to pass Heimbach and he led until his Micro quit running placing the young driver back in the lead for good. With the added purse from Commercial Stainless, Heimbach's take for the Feature was $500. Congratulations and thanks to the talented young driver for a fine show. This is the first time in 19 years at the Greenwood Valley Action Track for a same-night double win in the Rookies and Regulars. Across the line after Heimbach were Jason Kemp of Bloomsburg; Troy "Buster" Whitesell, Selinsgrove; Jason Rice, Easton; Eric Perchak, Hazelton; Todd Rittenhouse; Brent Boyer, Bloomsburg; A.J. Walters, Bloomsburg; Chris Smith and rounding out the top ten, Ryan Frable from Penn Argyl.
