Wright Named National Driver of the Year Again
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (December 6, 2005) -- American Sprint Car Series National champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, struck for the three-peat, as for the third year in a row he has been named National 360-ci Sprint Car Driver of the Year in a poll recently released by the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum.
On the strength of 14 feature wins, Wright notched his second O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores title in a row and became the series first repeat champion of the decade. Since 2000, other ASCS National champions have included Wayne Johnson, Zach Chappell, Tim Crawley and Travis Rilat.
Wright garnered thirteen of eighteen first-place votes in the ballot to take the top slot by a landslide. Wright doubled up by also earning Team of the Year honors for the second year in a row.
Bixby, Oklahoma's Darren Stewart, who finished second in O'Reilly ASCS National points behind Wright, was voted fourth in the poll, with former champion Travis Rilat of Forney, TX, who recorded a mixture of Regional and National wins in the latter portion of the season, sixth in the balloting.J South Dakota's Jake Peters, who finished fifth in ASCS Midwest Region points along with winning the Knoxville Raceway track championship, was fifth in the voting. Sunnyvale, TX, racer Sam Hafertepe, Jr., who edged Tony Bruce, Jr., for third in National points, was 20th in the poll.
Oregon's Roger Crockett, who claimed third in COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek points, was voted eleventh, with ASCS Midwest Region champion Billy Alley of Lincoln, NE, fifteenth.
Wright, Stewart, Rilat, Peters, Hafertepe, Jr., and Bruce, Jr., are among at least a dozen drivers that have committed to the American Sprint Cars on Tour (ASCoT) in 2006.
