Orrville,OH - - - Up and coming Sprint Car star Garrett "The Dirt Track Cowboy" Jacobs, 20, of Orrville, OH, was the recent recipient of the Wayne County Speedway "Most Improved Driver" award which was bestowed upon the young hotshoe at the recent Wayne County Speedway Awards Banquet. Jacobs finished seventh in the final season points standings in Wayne County Speedway's BOSS 360 Sprint Car division. During his rookie season in 1999, Jacobs finished the year out in 23rd position, better his final standings in points during the 2000 season by 16 positions. Jacobs, driver of the family-owned Jacobs Motorsports #75J Sprint Car, also announced the team will have a new website soon and will be fielding Maxim chassis in 2001.
"I was really excited when they called my name," stated Jacobs. "I wasn't sure I was going to get it. I thought a couple of the other drivers had jumped up quite a bit too. I wasn't positive I was going to get it. But I did have a decent year and I just hope it keeps getting better."
"It just feels good to race there, especially with guys who have racing ten,twelve years and this was only my second year of racing. I think that looks good, reaching the top ten in points. Especially with the caliber of talent they have at Wayne County Speedway."
Jacobs' accomplishment is made even more special for the personable, talented racer due to the fact that his great-grandfather, Pete Jacobs, was the founder of the track and his grandfather, and partner in Jacobs Motorsports #75J, was an original board member and investor.
Jacobs made every feature event in the ultra-tough BOSS 360 Sprint Car class during 2000 at Wayne County Speedway with a season best finish of second. Driving only eight nights in 1999, the young open wheel pilot completed his first full season in 2000.
"I'm proud, really proud," commented Harve Jacobs about his grandson. "Especially with the points. Counting all of the race nights this year he probably doesn't have 25 nights in a race car. And with the competition that runs at Wayne County Speedway, some of them have been racing for years and he was able to finish ahead of a lot of them. But his determination, and ours, we all want to win, is what brought him here."
Besides thanking his family, Jacobs was also quick to give credit to his successful year to other supporters.
"I couldn't have done it without the sponsorship I had and without the backing of my family," said Jacobs. "As well as the fellowship of the other drivers. They really helped me quite a bit this year, too. It made me feel like I did accomplish something this year."
Jacobs was supported by a wide array of sponsors in 2000 that included Jacobs Show Horses, Martin D. Yoder Livestock, Royal Lubricants, Center Line, Shira Quarter Horses and Blair Signs.
His team is managed by Harve Jacobs, and Garrett Jacobs' aunt, team marketing and public relations director Tina Heil. The pit crew consisted of Rob Heil, Todd Cornelius, Chris Griffin and standout Sprint Car veteran Bill Underwood. For 2001 all crew members will return and former Sprint Car driver John Lewis will be joining the team as the chassis specialist.
The team, which fielded Eagle and Maxim chassis in 2000, will go exclusively with Maxim Chassis in 2001. The team also announced that they will have a new website within the next several weeks located at the popular dirt track racers site, www.Dirt-Racers.com. A formal announcement will be forthcoming.
For 2001 the popular young star will be branching out and running various BOSS 360 Sprint Car events at WCS, Midway, Limaland and elsewhere. The team also plans on competing a various NRA Invaders 360 Sprint Car events. While Jacobs will not be committing to chasing points in 2001 as the team's travel plans are expanded, he is fairly content with his showing in the 2000 points battle at WCS.
"Finishing in the top ten, that was really good," offered Jacobs. "My goal was to be in the top ten in points this year. I had another goal that I did not reach this year and that was to win a feature. I wish I could have done that as I was close a couple times. But you don't have to win every night to win the points."
The team expects to announce sponsors for their 2001 season in the coming weeks. They will field two Maxim Chassis with power supplied by a Draime Racing Engine. Besides the new website, the team is also currently developing a variety of promotional items to market their driver and team during the 2001 season.
