After 14 Years, the Empire Super Sprints Return to the Five Mile Point
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's been since May 26th, 1990 that the Empire Super Sprints (ESS), one of the nations premiere 360 sprint car organizations have graced the quarter-mile dirt oval known as the Five Mile Point Speedway. On Friday night, September 24th, history will be made as winged warriors and the ESS Tour 2004 will kick off the National Quarter-Mile Dirt Track Weekend.
The fast oval in Kirkwood, N.Y. is now under promotion of Andy Harpell and the younger brother of long-time Five Mile promoter (Dan) is putting together an exciting schedule for the 2004 season with ESS being one of the highlights.
Helping in sponsoring the night is Mike and Deb VanDusen and their ProSpas business. The VanDusen name is familiar in Five Mile history as Mike has claimed countless feature wins aboard a modified. Both Mike and his son Jeff are expected to be behind the wheel of a sprint car for the ESS event. Mike has 16 career ESS victories while Jeff has claimed two in his short career with a top five placing in points the goal for this season.
On that May evening back in 1990, Rick Crane graced the victory lane in one of his four career ESS triumphs. While the names have changed, top flight talent will be gracing the pits to help celebrate the big weekend. Teenager Justin Barger will be a big favorite, the runner-up in ESS points last season has won a 360 open event two years ago at Five Mile and will be looking to lock down his first title in this night. Barger's challenges will come from Dan Kaszubinski, John Karklin Jr., Lance Yonge, former track record holder Doug Emery and a whole slew of there stars and cars on the ESS Tour 2004.
The addition of Five Mile Point to the ESS schedule joins in with the Evans Mills Raceway, Can-Am Motorsports Park and the Merrittville Speedway as returnees to the tour so far in 2004. The ESS tour is still being finalized with more dates being added, finishing touches should be in place by mid-February.
Friday night. September 24th is the date, Five Mile Point Speedway is the site--the return of the Empire Super Sprints and it will be excitement guaranteed!!!
