SYRACUSE, N.Y. - As the half-a-million dollar Empire Super Sprint Tour 2000 reaches the final point shows. This Saturday's event at the Merrittville Speedway will take on a new feel to it. It's the third and final visit to the D-shaped oval just outside Niagara Falls, Canada but as the top 15 in ESS points are closer than ever, the 20 lap A-Main will be an all out affair with each position change oh so important.
Rob Dietrick and R.C. Faigle won the first two events at Merrittville and they will be in the field looking to double up their victories at the popular speedplant. Mike Woodring is currently leading the ESS point race and is in the driver's seat in clinching his sixth championship which will tie him with former ESS great Mal Lane. The title would also be Woodring's fifth in a row, one shy of Lane's record six consecutive.
Mal Lane is now an owner and his driver Lance Yonge is taking the chase of Woodring. Yonge is looking for his first ESS title as a driver as is Lane as an owner. There is also a race in a race that will take place Saturday night and that's for the Jereco Engine and Parts Rookie of the Year title where New York's Randy Years and Quebec's Alain Bergeron are neck and neck for the $500 cash prize.
Also, this event marks the final race for the Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar/LeBrie Design Canadian Invasion point title. A total of $1000 cash is up for grabs to the top ten in points as well as a $400 helmet detail and a $300 stained glass trophy to the champion. Currently, Mike Stelter (749) leads Woodring (746) and Doug Emery (732) in the Canadian points battle.
Niagara Frontier sprint fans...are you ready for one wild night?? The best of "America's Race Cars" are invading for the final time. There is more than just the checkered flag on the line so it will be a night you don't want to miss!
