SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- One of the highlights of the off season in New York State is the annual Arnot Mall Show which comes on Sat. and Sun. March 27 & 28. The successful event will be hosted by the Black Rock Speedway and two cars that will be featured are Empire Super Sprints (ESS) stars Tim Kelly and Lance Yonge. Both drivers will be on hand handing out ESS schedules and looking to meet a great many ESS fans that will visit the picturesque mall located between Elmira and Corning, N.Y.
Kelly, along with co-owner Eddie Vickio, will have their sharp green and gold colored Avenger built sprinter in place. With a Doug Holmes built motor under the hood, the team is looking to move up the ESS points ladder for 2004 building on their feature triumph last year at Stateline in July. One of their sponsors Quality Welding will also be displaying their products alongside the #12 sprinter. Other backing for the team comes from VFL Energy Technologies, Hilliard Corp. and Lane's Yamaha.
While the name of Lance Yonge is not a new fixture to all in ESS, the look will be for 2004. Yonge is now a car owner again bringing back his old number 17J to the Tour for this season. A Maxim built sprinter will be blue in color and powered a HG Associates Motor. Backing for the many-time ESS winner will be from Johnson Farms, Lane's Yamaha, Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing, Penn Yan Mini Storage and A+ Superior Services. Since the former Black Rock big block and small block champion decided to switch to the all out speed of the sprinters in 1992, the Penn Yan resident has never finished out of the top five in ESS points. While that streak is hoping not to be broken for 2004, the goal is the ESS championship, a coveted title where he has been a bridesmaid several times.
The Mall Show will open at 10 AM on Saturday and run until 9:30 while Sunday hours will be 11-6. To get there you simply take Rt. 17, also known as Interstate 86, to exit 51 and the admission is free.
ESS will make two appearances at Black Rock with the first as a Saturday night highlight to Nextel Cup Watkins Glen weekend with a special challenge event that will pay the winner $2,095 for the 25 lap event. The second visit to the Yates County oval by the stars and cars of ESS will be Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 &11 with the running of the sixth annual Bully Hill Vineyards Fall Sprint Nationals. The $40,000 event for 360 sprinters will see a $4,000 top prize going to the winner of the 35 lap A-Main.
