Sodus, NY - Mike Emhof, of Sodus, NY, took his Pace Electronics sponsored car to victory circle in the opening leg of the 2000 Dow Corning/Kaman Industrial Technologies CVRA Mini Sprint Challenge Cup, presented by HSBC, held June 9th at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Malta, NY. The race was a first of three in the CVRA Mini Sprint Challenge Cup series, a tour within the 2000 Central New York Mini Sprint (CNYMS) tour. The mini sprint feature was sponsored by Carriage Traders, South Glens Falls, NY. Emhof, Bob Scaccio (Suffern, NY) and Peter Sindt (Stone Ridge, NY) won the heat races. The trio occupied three of the top four starting positions in the feature, where close racing and action galore was the name of the game. Sindt started on the pole, and lead through the halfway point, as Doug Norrie (West Suffield, CT), Scaccio, Emhof, and Paul James (Albany, NY) battled close behind. Emhof took second when Norrie spun between turns three and four. Scaccio and Bill Jaycox (Cobleskill, NY) got together and both cars flipped bringing out the red flag. When the race resumed, Emhof was able to overtake Sindt for the lead on lap 9. The two battled wheel to wheel for the next five laps, with Emhof working the high line, and Sindt staying low. With Emhof leading on lap 14, the caution flew. On the single file restart, Sindt lost his left rear tire. James went airborne after hitting the tire, again bringing out the red flag. On the ensuing restart, Emhof was able to hold off tour points leader Tim Smythe (Malone, NY) to take the checkered flag. Jim VanSteenburg (West Shokan, NY) and P.J. Peworchik (Binghamton, NY) both had late race surges to finish third and fourth, respectively. Anthony Cain (Fairfax, VT) rounded out the top five. In addition to the winner's purse, Emhof took home contingency product awards from Dow Corning (Midland, Michigan) and from Farrell Oil (Wilton, NY), and a gift certificate from Seymour Enterprises (Malboro, MA). Sindt won the Speedway Advertising (Hookset, NH) front runner cash bonus for leading the most laps. Norrie and Tom Richard (Tolland, CT) took home cash bonuses for the top finishing 750 cc machines. Rookie Cory Sparks (Scotia, NY) was the race "Hard Charger," finishing 10th after starting the race from the 20th position. The CNYMS tour will travel to Accord (NY) Speedway on June 16th to make up an early season rainout. Mini sprint race team members who signed in at Accord the night of the rainout are reminded to bring their pit bracelets for readmission.
