Jennings Bowls Over COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek Round Five Foes
MESQUITE, Tex. (June 9, 2005) -- Norman, Oklahoma's Danny Jennings has found the winning combination at Devil's Bowl Speedway and proved it by becoming the fifth different winner in as many nights of racing action during the 13th Annual COMP Cams American Sprint Car Series Speedweek by topping Thursday night's 25-lap feature.
Jennings, who swept the Devil's Bowl ASCS Spring Nationals to kick off the season in March, charged past Larry Neighbors to take command on the sixth round and was never headed as he collected his third O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores feature victory of the season aboard the Folks-powered DJ Motorsports/Lucas Oil Products No. 61J Maxim.
"I don't know what it is, I just hope it doesn't go away," Jennings commented in victory lane when queried about his recent mastery of the famed half-mile clay oval speedplant. "My guys had the car set up to work the bottom and it worked great the whole race."
While Jennings gridded the feature field fifth, Wayne Johnson and Brad Welborn led the way to the green flag. Jennings bolted into the lead on the initial start, only to have it waved off when Welborn spun off the top of turn two.
Jan Howard assumed the front row outside starting position on the ensuing restart and claimed the early lead when Johnson slid off the top of turn two. Howard led the opening round in front of Jennings and Neighbors as Johnson fell to eighth.
After a lap one caution for a turn one spin by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Neighbors raced past Jennings for the runner-up slot on the second lap then used the high line in turn two to overtake Howard for the point the next time around.
After Lee Sowell's turn two spin brought out the race's final caution with three laps in the books, Neighbors led the way in front of Howard, Jennings, 12th-starter Darren Stewart, Shane Clement and Johnson.
With the final 22 rounds run in non-stop fashion, Jennings disposed of Howard for second on the fourth round then raced past Neighbors to snare the lead two laps later. Lapped traffic came into play on the 10th round but did little to deter Jennings quick pace.
Neighbors did momentarily close the gap on Jennings when heavy traffic came into play on the 19th round. Jennings maneuvered through the traffic adeptly however, and raced to the checkered flag unabated to capture his sixth career O'Reilly ASCS National Tour victory.
Neighbors settled for second, while Stewart maintained a slim COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek point lead by claiming the show position. Johnson recovered from his early bobble to finish fourth, with Gary Wright racing from 15th to round out the top five.
Oregon's Roger Crockett earned Hard Charger honors by advancing from 17th to sixth, with Howard settling for seventh at the line. Zach Chappell finished eighth after starting 13th, with Skip Wilson and Minnesota's Dustin Lindquist completing the top ten.
Johnson, Howard, Clement, Don Young and Wilson topped heat race action for the 37-car field, with Wright and Jake Martens winning the twin 12-lap "B" Mains.
The night's only red flag flew on the initial attempt to start the second "B" Main when Mike Sitzmann, Jr., and Marshall Skinner tangled and flipped after contact with the frontstretch wall. While Skinner's car was destroyed, there were no injuries.
COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek action continues Friday night at 67 Texarkana Speedway before wrapping up at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway on Saturday night.
