WEIKERT ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RUN PORT ROYAL By Shawn Brouse for the Port Royal Speedway

3/18/01 – “You can put the word out,” said legendary sprint car owner Bob Weikert on Sunday at the Williams Grove Speedway. “I’ll be there!” After a three-year absence, Weikert and his famed No. 29 will be returning in 2001 to run the Port Royal Speedway on a regular basis. Weikert last campaigned regularly at the oval in 1997 with drivers Mike Lutz and Judd Shepard at the helm. With Waynesboro jockey Dave Ely at the wheel for Weikerts 31st season of ownership, Weikert hopes to bring his rejuvenated team back to Port Royal and return it to victory lane. The last time he visited the winners circle in Juniata County, he did so with Lenny Krautheim III behind the wheel in May of 1994. “The Port Royal people are great and that track has always been my pick of the tracks,” said Weikert. The speedway may hold a place in Ely’s heart as well, considering the 23 year-old hot shoe posted his first ever super sprint win there in All Star sanctioned, Tuscarora 50 preliminary action in 1999. Wrenched by veteran Ely patriarch Mike and with increased involvement by Weikert’s son Todd, look for the Ely/Weikert pairing to make some noise at Port Royal this season. Ely will be a welcome addition to the intact Port field, which includes Keith Kauffman, Lance Dewease, Todd Shaffer, Todd Hestor, Shawn Keen and many more of Central Pennsylvanias finest.
