BLOOMINGTON, IN (May 22, 2004) -- In the pits prior to last night's races Kevin Briscoe was uncertain as to whether or not he would have a good night. He absolutely loves his new Stealth Y2K4; however, he was concerned as to whether he could get his power to the track. He had a choice. He could run his big motor tonight; or he and his dad could change motors when they got home last night. Obviously he would have to have the strong motor at Terre Haute tonight.

In the end, Kevin and Dick put their faith in Mike Miles. They knew that Mike would do everything that he could to insure that the track would stay heavy. And, since there would be no qualifications, he felt that the track would last. And, it did. When the green flag dropped to start his heat race, Kevin checked out. His car was a rocket ship; and Kevin had to like his chances in the feature.

Since the KISS series features are lined up based on a draw among the top two drivers in each heat race, Kevin's chances would be, in part, determined by the luck of the draw. Michael Burthay, winner of the first two KISS series features, experienced continued good fortune in the initial draw. He drew pole position in the first heat race. He wound up with the win and made the draw for the feature pole. His luck wasn't quite as good in the second draw. He would start outside of the first row beside Kevin "Pup" Huntley. The second row contained the only two Bloomington Speedway sprint car champions on hand, Kevin Briscoe and four time champion Derek Scheffel.

When the green flag dropped to start the feature, Pup Huntley charged into the lead with Burthay on his tail. Burthay got past Huntley on the fourth circuit; and it looked like Burthay might make it three straight in the KISS series. However, on the seventh circuit Briscoe got past Burthay to take the lead that he would hold until the checkered flags flew. Scheffel dropped back in the early going; but during the closing laps Scheffel charged through the field to finish second. Derek has been absent when the luck was passed out all season; and it was good to see him turn in a good run when he finally avoided starting on the tail all night.

Huntley came home third trailed by Justin Marvel, Burthay, Kenny Carmichael, Eric Shivley, Shawn Krockenburger, John Wolfe, and Bryan Clauson.

In preliminary action, things got off to a wild start. As the field came down to take the green flag in the first heat race, Dick Gaines II ran over somebody's wheel, soared high into the air, and slammed into the flag stand. Flagman Rusty Nunn spun around to avoid the Gaines machine; and he slammed into the light pole that supports the flag stand. He wound up with a dislocated shoulder which was replaced on the spot. Gaines wild ride ended with his broken car dangling from a light pole. Gaines extricated himself from the car; and then the work commenced to get the car down. Mike Miles brought in a front end loader and used it to remove the Gaines mount from the light pole. Racing resumed and Burthay drove on to a win. The other heats were won by Briscoe, Huntley, and and Krockenburger.

Wil Newlin won the "C" Feature; and Brandon Petty took the "B" feature."

While Briscoe broke Michael Burthay's string of KISS series feature wins, Burthay did leave Bloomington Speedway with his points lead intact. Kent Christian was second in the points trailed by Eric Shivley, Jason Robbins, Matt Westfall, Derek Scheffel, A.J. Anderson, Kenny Carmichael, Jared Fox, and Shawn Krockenberger.

John DeMoss Takes O'Neal Wood Product Modified Feature --

Jesse Cramer got a good jump on the field when the O'Neal Wood Products modified feature began. Cramer held the lead for the first three circuits before losing the point to John DeMoss. DeMoss. DeMoss led the rest of the 25 laps to take the feature win. Brady Short passed Cramer to take second place on the 21st circuit; but he would not be able to take the lead from DeMoss. On the 22nd lap, Shelby Miles passed Cramer to take third place. Cramer held on to finish fourth trailed by Gary Barrow, Justin Hobson, Brad Cummings, Jay Humphrey, Donnie Parson, and Nathan Voorhies.

In preliminary modified action, Short, Cummings, and Cramer won the heat races; and Eddie Lake took the B feature. Short won the dash to earn the right to start the feature on the pole.

The win was John DeMoss's first of the season.

KENDALL TAKES SECOND TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCK FEATURE --

When the green flag waved to start the Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock feature, Mike Jones charged into the lead that he would hold for the first 12 circuits. However, Greg Kendall had been working his way to the front from his ninth place starting position; and he took the lead from Jones on the following lap. Terry Arthur had started fourth; and he passed Jones to take second on the 16th circuit. Terry was poised to take his first feature win; and all he had to do was get past Kendall. However, Kendall is not an easy man to beat on the red clay.

A yellow flag on the 23rd circuit brought a stop to the battle between Arthur and Kendall; and Kendall's mount seemed to be smoking. The question at hand was whether or not Arthur would be able to hold off Kendall for the final three circuits. Kendall's car seemed to be starting to smoke. Arthur's chances were looking good. He took the white flag with Kendall still behind him; however, on the final lap Kendall passed him to take his second feature win of the season.

Arthur held on to finish second trailed by Kevin Arthur, Michael Vest, Danny Harris, Jack Frye, Steve Hollars, Troy Clark, Ben DuBois, and Anthony Walker.

Mike Jones, Greg Amick, and Mike Vest won the heat races while Mel Bigham won the B feature. Mike Jones took the dash.
