Brown Takes O'Reilly ASCoT Honors at Sedalia

SEDALIA, Mo. (July 3, 2006) -- Brian Brown took full advantage of his front row starting position to avoid a wild ten-car melee on the initial start then wired the field to capture his first O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour victory of the season in Monday night's 25-lap Summer Nationals feature at the Missouri State Fair Speedway as 46 entries filled the pit area.

After six cars were eliminated on the initial start, Brown outgunned Randy Martin for the point at the drop of the green then fought off a pair of challenges from Tony Bruce, Jr., to secure his second career ASCS National Tour victory aboard the Doogs-owned Ostrich-powered American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer/Diablo Ice No. 21 Maxim.

"I think ol' George (Lasoski) just keeps getting sharper the older he gets, he kinda showed me where the rubber was and once I moved down there nobody was gonna get by," an enthused Brown commented after his fourth overall ASCS win of 2006. "This win means a lot to me, Daniel McMillin was a true competitor and to win this in his honor is special."

Brown led the field to the green flag from the pole position with defending O'Reilly Winged Outlaw Warriors champion Martin alongside. But trouble erupted from the third row back as the 24-car feature field charged off turn four, as sixth-starter Toby Brown got pushed high and then was clipped by Curtis Boyer.

As the remainder of the field scrambled to avoid the melee, former WOW champ Terry Hinck, current ASCoT point leader Nick Smith, Tim Newman, defending ASCS Sooner Region champion Sean McClelland, Matthew Fox, former WOW champ Eric Schrock, 14-year-old Trey Robb and two-time and defending ASCS National champion Gary Wright all were collected in the scrum. Smith and Wright, the leading contenders for the 2006 ASCoT championship, were among those that flipped along with Boyer and Robb.

Toby Brown, Boyer, Smith, McClelland, Schrock and Robb were eliminated for the night, while Wright pieced enough back together to rejoin the field and complete a lap. Wright's ability to rejoin the field and take the green flag earned him an 18th-place finish rather than 24th, picking up a dozen valuable points in the $50,000 championship points chase in the process.

With the wreckage cleared, Brian Brown gunned into the lead ahead of Martin, as Bruce picked off three positions on the opening circuit to climb to third. Bruce battled past Martin for second on the fourth round and set his sights on Brown.

Bruce closed to Brown's rear nerf bar and briefly challenged for the lead on the eleventh circuit, then nearly took advantage when Brown slipped high in turn two on the 17th lap. But Brown shut the door both times to retain the lead.

Brown stayed in the preferred line over the closing rounds to score the win, with Bruce falling just one position short of his first career ASCS National Tour victory in the Salina-powered Best Well Service No. 18 Maxim.

Jon Corbin raced past Martin for third on the sixth lap and held the position to the line to equal his best-career ASCS National finish, with 12th-starter Jason Johnson and Martin rounding out the top five.

Darren Stewart crossed the stripe sixth, with Jesse Hockett, Jan Howard, 18th-starter Travis Rilat and Chris Morgan completing the top ten.

Howard, Corbin, Boyer, Morgan and Hockett topped heat race action. Corbin pulled off a last-lap pass of Sam Hafertepe, Jr., to win his heat, while a determined Hockett charged from sixth to first in just one lap in his heat race. Curtis Evan flipped in turn two in the fourth heat without injury, but was done for the night.

McClelland battled past Matthew Fox first and then Ed Wagner on the 10th lap to win the First 12-lap "B" Main, with Rilat wiring the field in the second "B" Main.

In an unprecedented move, drivers among the top fifteen in O'Reilly ASCoT points voted in unanimous fashion to award Jesse Hockett points for Saturday night's event despite missing it less than 24 hours after crew chief and cousin Daniel McMillin's tragic passing. The vote allowed Hockett to retain his third position in points and remain in strong championship contention.
