It's All Wright in ASCS Speedweek Round Three at Devil's Bowl
MESQUITE, Tex. (July 19, 2007) -- With the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series championship chase at full boil, three-time and reigning series champion Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, is stepping up to meet the challenge.
And what better place than Devil's Bowl Speedway for "The Texan" to strengthen his cause, as he completed a sweep of the night's action by wiring the field in Thursday night's 25-lap feature to put the wraps on the third leg of the 15th Annual ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek.
"Devil's Bowl has been awful good to me over the years," the five-time ASCS Speedweek champion commented after his fifth career ASCS Speedweek win atop the famed 0x00bd-mile clay oval and 16th overall ASCS National win at Devil's Bowl.
The triumph marked Wright's tenth of the season, 25th career in ASCS Speedweek action and 116th career ASCS National win.
"We put this car together before we went to Missouri a couple of weeks ago and it's worked just great, I think we've won four races with it now," Wright explained after his fourth series triumph in the last six events.
Wright won his heat race from the pole position and after ranking fifth in passing points, drew the number one position for the Pole Dash. Wright took full advantage by winning his fifth Pole Dash of the year.
But directly on Wright's outside shoulder was his closest championship competitor in both the season-long $50,000 points chase as well as the Speedweek crown, Jason Johnson. It mattered little however, as Wright gunned into the lead at the outset and blistered the clay oval virtually unchallenged throughout.
Johnson closed to within several car-lengths as Wright was working through lapped traffic with less then laps remaining. But when the red flag flew after Darren Stewart tipped over with 20 laps in the books, there was no match for Wright in open track.
Wright raced to the checkered flag with nearly a half straightaway advantage aboard the Wesmar-powered Richwood Construction/Southwest Express/Whiteco Commercial Funding No. 9 Maxim, while Johnson settled for second aboard Lanny Row's Wesmar-powered The Shop Motorsports No. 41 Eagle.
Wright extended his series points lead to 19 markers over Johnson.
After starting seventh, Tim Crawley battled past Danny Jennings for third by the eighth round. After trading the spot with Joe Wood, Jr., several laps later, Crawley fought off one last challenge from Wayne Johnson to secure the show position aboard Mike Ward's CnB Mushroom Farms No. 88 Maxim.
Wayne Johnson charged from 15th snare fourth in Mike and Tim Hammers' Wesmar-powered H&H Enterprises No. 94 Eagle after breaking out a new car following Monday night's Creek County Speedway crash.
Travis Rilat advanced a half dozen positions to round out the top five aboard the F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X.
Wood posted a career best ASCS National Tour finish of sixth, with Larry Neighbors crossing the stripe seventh. Kevin Ramey raced from 17th to claim eighth, with Nick Smith in ninth. After utilizing a Speedweek provisional, Kenneth Walker raced from 24th to record his third consecutive tenth place finish.
Wood, Wright, Stewart, Danny Jennings and Jason Johnson topped heat race action for the 42-car field, with Ramey and Aaron Berryhill winning the twin "B" Mains.
The First "B" Main was red-flagged after five laps for a grinding turn two crash involving Tommy Hall and Todd Evans. Evans escaped injury, while Hall was transported to a local hospital. No further updates were available at press time.
The 15th Annual ASCS Sizzlin' Summer Speedweek resumes with Round Four at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on Friday night, then concludes with Round Five on Saturday night at Lawton Speedway.
