ZANESVILLE, OH -- Danny Smith passed race long leader Chad Kemenah with only two laps remaining Monday night at Muskingum County Speedway to win the 40 lap Haulmark All Star Sprint 23rd annual Raceweek feature. Kemenah looked to have the race well in hand with Smith and Byron Reed battling for second. But with three to go it was three cars wide for the lead and Smith put a great slide job on Kemenah for the top spot to lead lap 39, and he ended up winning by a car length.

"I just drove my butt off and I didn't even see the checkered or know the race was over. They pointed me back top the scales and it was a good feeling then," Smith revealed after his second win of the year in his own J&D Performance powered Maxim chassis. "The longer the race went the better we got. The track got better than I thought it would be."

Dale Blaney started from the pole with Byron Reed alongside. Row two gridded Dean Jacobs and Smith, followed by Kenny Jacobs and Kemenah. Reed took the lead at the start with Kemenah challenging him every lap. With a slide job move off turn four, Kemenah took over the lead on lap four and began to pull away from Reed and Blaney. By the halfway mark of the event, Kemenah led over Reed, Smith, Dean Jacobs and Kerry Madsen.

Lap 24 saw a caution for Brock Mayes with engine problems, and Ryan Coniam went sliding off the track to avoid Mayes. Kemenah motored away from Reed on the restart, and Smith began really challenging Reed for second.

Following another restart, it was a three car race. Kemenah's lead was just a car length ahead of the battle between Reed and Smith. Reed ran second for five laps, then it was Smith in that spot. As heavy lapped traffic loomed, Kemenah's lead was down to one car length, and in the final three laps it was three wide for the lead, then Smith dove under Kemenah for the win.

Kemenah ended up second and Randy Hannagan after starting 13th, got by Reed on the last lap for third. Reed was fourth ahead of Kelly Kinser, Madsen, Kenny Jacobs, Blaney, Dean Jacobs and Jeremy Campbell.

"When you're in the lead, you are a guinea pig, when you're the leader you don't know where they're (second place) are at," a dejected Kemenah said afterward.

The Crown Battery heat fell to Ryan Coniam, the B&B Products heat went to Lee Jacobs, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Cody Geldart and the TP Wings heat fell to Rob Chaney. Lee Jacobs won the special Pete Jacobs Memorial Dash, which paid $200 to win from the track purse plus an additional $100 from Joe Conroy. All four Jacobs' present competed in the event. Kerry Madsen was the University of Northwestern Ohio B Main winner and K. Jacobs captured the Haulmark Dash. Kemenah was the Huggins Cams Fast Time qualifier worth $100 from Community Ambulance Service and $100 from Balderson Dodge.
