ORRVILLE, OH - 26 June 2000 -Byron Reed became the 34th different feature winner in 18 years of Ohio Speedweek Monday night at Wayne Co. Speedway in the All Star sprint 30-lap feature. After starting 11th, Reed methodically worked his way through the pack, taking the lead from Todd Gracey on lap 23 and holding off Ed Lynch Jr. at the finish to earn $5,000. With rain in the area, the program was run quickly with the checkered falling at 9:00 p.m. "We qualified 30th last night and missed the show and I qualified 11th tonight which actually wasn't too bad the way I've been going lately. I just needed to be patient," Reed said from victory lane beside his Reebar Die Casting Kistler-Chevrolet powered Maxim on an American Racer right rear tire. "I can't thank my mom and dad and father-in-law enough, they're all the crew I have. And the track was the best I've ever seen it in 10 years of coming here." Greg Wilson started on the ButlerBuilt Hot Seat pole with Gracey alongside in Ken Cooper's No. 25. Gracey took the lead over Wilson and Lynch, with Kenny Jacobs fourth. When the first caution appeared on lap seven, Reed was up to sixth behind All Star points leader Rodney Duncan. After the restart, Lynch and Wilson put on a fierce battle for second just behind Gracey. Lynch got second for good on lap 11, and was poised to move high around Gracey for the lead on lap 12 when Rob Chaney missed the pit entrance and stopped on the speedway surface. Mark Keegan and Duncan made contact while battling for seventh a lap later, with the result being the caution flew for Duncan backwards against the turn two guardrail. He was done for the evening. Gracey pulled away from Lynch as Reed took third from Wilson on the restart, with Kelly Kinser now fifth and Jacobs sixth. Reed set his sights on Lynch, and they battled tooth and nail for four laps, with Reed trying the lower groove and Lynch running the cushion. Lap 21 saw Reed go under Lynch for second coming off turn four, and he used his momentum to breeze by Gracey using the same move off four to lead lap 23. Gracey now had his hands full with Lynch, and Lynch got by for second with a high groove move off turn two on lap 27. Although Reed had trouble with a lapped car the last three laps, he had enough of an advantage to win by six car lengths over Lynch and Gracey. "Byron drove a great race," Lynch said. "He drove by me and he was gone. It was a good battle up front all night long. It's pretty amazing for a dirt track to be going three wide at the end of 30 laps," Lynch concluded, leaning against the Lynch Racing Kistler powered J&J. " Right at the end I got my tire too hot," Gracey revealed of his third place finish. "I was pushing it too hard the last few laps. If I would have settled down a little bit we might have done better." Wilson was fourth, Keegan fifth and Kinser sixth. Jacobs finished seventh, winning the Team Simpson Racing Lucky Seven award. Kasey Kahne in eighth won the TW Metals nightly cash bonus, ahead of Eric Hysong and Chad Kemenah. The heats went to Rob Chaney, Jason Statler, Reed and Kemenah. Butch Schroeder won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions B Main while Gracey captured the Commercial Truck & Trailer Dash and Steve Butler captured the C Main. Frankie Kerr used a provisional starting spot to race in the A Main.
