Tampa, FL....1/28/01......East Bay Raceway starts its 25th Anniversary Winternational season, Thursday, February 1 through Saturday February 17, with record purses and a record number of entries on file for the 17 nights of competition. Track owner, Stanley Kolan introduced a phrase when he purchased the 1/3 mile oval three years ago.... "Catch The New Spirit of East Bay." Each year since then, the winter shows have been bigger and better than the previous year. Without a doubt, more cars and fans have 'caught that spirit' as the entries pour in and the ticket sales soar.
The 3rd Annual King of 360's which started with just 48 cars on hand in 1999, is ready to kick things off running February 1, 2 and 3 for a $60,000 purse. The event now boasts 87 entries from 26 states including previous winners Gary Wright and Ronald Laney. both from Texas. Late Model action dominates the track for six nights, starting February 5, with STARS running their preliminary events first, then UDTRA. STARS big 100-lapper goes Friday, February 10 while UDTRA has their big finale the following night, Saturday. Glenn Donnelly's big-block DIRT Modifieds return for the first time since 1983, doubling up with Late Models on Friday and Saturday, February 9 and 10 before the DIRT headliner on Sunday, February 11.
On East Bay's second attempt to include open-wheel modifieds in the Winternationals, this year featuring the WISSOTA, IMCA, UMP style cars, the field has doubled from 48 last year to 97 with more cars expected before they race on February 11, 12 and 13. Joining them on the last two nights will be the crowd-pleasing, Run-What-You-Brung gang (tried just once during the regular season.)
Last on stage, will be the All Star Circuit of Champions sprint cars from February 14 through February 17. Their four-night stand will end with a 50-lapper and $25,000-to-win
Tickets are available daily at the track from 9:00AM to 5:00PM and by phone at toll-free 1-800-457-5611 and charges may be paid for by check, MasterCard or Visa. The track is located five miles south of I-4 just off Rt. 41 South.
