Chad Kemenah wins at 81 Speedway
WICHITA, KS -- It was the fifth win of the season for Chad Kemenah Friday night at 81 Speedway in the Haulmark All Star sprint car-NCRA Thunder Through the Plains 30 lap X-1R feature. Kemenah lost the lead to Shane Stewart on lap 23, but battled back to get under the Oklahoma driver as the white flag was unfurled and he narrowly edged Stewart at the finish.
By virtue of his sixth fastest quaifying time, Kemenah started on the pole in the Harble Racing Eagle-Kistler, with Danny Smith alongside. Jason Johnson and Stewart's mIn Motorsports Rudeen Racing 4m gridded in row two with Gary Lee Maier and Travis Whitney starting from row three. Smith grabbed the opening lead from Kemenah, with Stewart third and Maier fourth. On the second circuit, Maier tried to dive under Stewart for third, but Stewart slammed the door on Maier, with Maier spinning to bring out a caution flag. Kemenah kept the pressure on Smith following the restart. Smith and Kemenah were side-by-side on lap three, with Kemenah nosing under the 30 year racing veteran coming off turn four to lead lap four. Bill Rose flipped right in front of Kemenah on lap nine, bringing out a red flag. Kemenah, Smith and Stewart were able to avoid the Rose mount and luckily Rose was uninjured.
For the restart Kemenah led Smith, Stewart, Johnson, Jeremy Campbell, Daron Clayton and Mike Lutz who started 12th. Kemenah pulled away from the battle between Smith and Stewart for second. Stewart dove under Smith to grab the runnerup spot as Kemenah continued to stretch his advantage. Campbell began challenging Smith for third as the leaders entered heavy lapped traffic. Jason Martin was also on the move. He started 16th and was up to seventh by the halfway mark of the event.
Campbell and Smith were still battling for third behind Kemenah and Stewart on lap 21 when another yellow was thrown for the stalled machine of Tony Bruce Jr.
This stoppage erased Kemenah's huge advantage. Stewart lined up right on Kemenah's back bumper for the restart. Kemenah used the low groove and Stewart stayed on top following the restart, and Stewart powered around the All Star points leader to take command on lap 23. Stewart pulled out to a four car length lead, but then his machine began getting loose, allowing Kemenah to close right back in. The pair were nose to tail on lap 27. Kemenah kept the pressure on and seized the opportunity to make the winning pass on lap 28 when Stewart got loose again. Kemenah dove low and grabbed the lead coming off turn four to seal the win.
Stewart was a disappointed second, with Smith holding on to third and Johnson fourth. Defending ESS champion Lutz was an impressive fifth ahead of Berryhill, Jeremy Campbell, 15th starting Dean Jacobs, Martin and Maier.
The Crown Battery heat fell to Daron Clayton, the B&B Products heat went to Greg Wilson, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Dean Jacobs and the TP Wings heat fell to Brooke Tatnell. Aaron Berryhill won the University of Northwestern Ohio B Main and Wilson also captured the Haulmark Dash. Travis Whitney was the Huggins Cams Fast Time qualifier with a new track record of 13.207 seconds, snapping the 13.544 standard set by Kenny Jacobs in 2001.
