LIVERPOOL FC LOOKS TO BUILD ON ITS LEAD AS SUPERLEAGUE FORMULA BY SONANGOL BATTLE SWITCHES TO ZOLDER
09/07/2009 - Liverpool FC tops the Superleague by Sonangol points table as the pioneering football themed race series moves to Belgium for round two of this year's championship at Zolder on 18/19 July.
As the colourful grid of technically identical 750bhp V12 powered single-seater race cars - each one representing one of the world's 18 most famous soccer clubs - arrive at Zolder, the English club holds a slender two-point advantage over local Belgian favourite RSC Anderlecht and mighty AC Milan.
Liverpool FC won the first of the two opening races staged in France at the end of June plus the €100,000 top prize in the Super Final. It was a great day for the multiple UEFA Champions League victors and its Spanish driver Adrian Valles.
"Magny-Cours was really good for us," enthused the 23-year-old series leader from Alicante. "The Liverpool car was working really well and the team did a great job. Everybody at the football club is very excited as we won, so that's great for everybody."
Having come close to lifting last year's Superleague Formula crown for Liverpool, Valles knows what it takes to mount a serious title bid in an innovative series that includes its own unique qualifying system plus a totally reversed grid for the second race at every meeting. "The aim is to be consistent and to win when we can," he said. "We have a strong car so we must score as many points as we can at Zolder and try to maintain our lead in the championship."
The speedy Spaniard has happy memories of the Belgian track from two successful Superleague Formula performances at the venue in 2008. He recalled: "I had my first win for Liverpool at Zolder last year - the car worked really well. Also in the second reverse grid race we started right at the back having won the first race and still finished sixth - I hope we can do something similar this year."
