AC Milan and Galatasaray SK take third and seventh in debut Superleague season
- AC Milan Racing Team no.3 - Robert Doornbos
- Galatasaray SK Racing Team no.4 - Alessandro Pier Guidi
Jerez, Sunday, November 23, 2008 - Scuderia Playteam Sarafree's two V12, 750-horsepower cars featuring the colours of international football club Galatasaray SK on one car, and the popular magic red and black colours of AC Milan on the other finished the second race of the final round of the season in fourth and tenth place respectively. The result means Scuderia Playteam Sarafree finishes its maiden Superleague season in third place and seventh place overall for AC Milan and Galatasaray SK respectively.
It was a good day overall for the two teams with Robert Doornbos (AC Milan) winning race one and Alessandro Pier Guidi (Galatasaray SK) starting the second race from pole. Pier Guidi would go on to finish the second race fourth while Doornbos (AC Milan) finished tenth having started from the back of the field as a result of the grid being reversed for race two.
Beijing Guaon won the title thanks to a ninth place finish in race one and ends the season with 413 points, ahead of PSV Eindhoven (337 points) and AC Milan (335 points).
Galatasaray SK started race two from pole while AC Milan's victory in the first race meant it started from the back of the grid. Pier Guidi's (Galatasaray SK) maintained the lead ahead of Flamengo and Corinthians while Doornbos was racing though the field. After the pit stop Pier Guidi was still ahead of Borussia and Corinthians. Meanwhile, AC Milan had climbed up the classification and was eleventh on the fifteenth lap. Ten minutes from the flag, Galatasaray SK suffered a spin and lost some time, falling to fourth as Borussia took the lead ahead of Corinthians and Beijing. Galatasaray finished in fourth while AC Milan made one more position to end up in tenth.
Robert Doornbos (AC Milan) commented, "I would like to thank Scuderia Playteam SaraFree and the mechanics for their fantastic work all season. I had great fun and Superleague Formula can be proud of the series. I am very proud to have competed for the red and black colours of AC Milan all season. This team has not won the title, but is the strongest in the field. When the car was strong, I was always easily ahead of the game and that speaks for itself. Had we not had a problem with the gearbox, we would have kept second place in the championship, but I am happy with third anyway. At the end it is a happy ending."
Alessandro Pier Guidi (Galataasaray SK) commented, "I am a bit disappointed with my race. The first set of tyres was fine. I had good grip and was able to keep the lead. After the pit stop the tyres were a bit different and I lost my advantage. I had a bit of understeer and I did not manage to build as bit a gap as I wanted. I felt that the car was different from the first part of the race. And then I spun. This made the difference. Nevertheless, a great season and an incredible experience with a new series."
Chinese club Beijing Guoan earned the Superleague Formula "Premiership" on 413 points ahead of PSV Eindhoven, 337; AC Milan, 335; Liverpool FC, 325; AS Roma, 307; RSC Anderlecht, 303, FC Porto, 277; Galatasaray, 277; Corinthians, 264; Sevilla, 262; Tottenham Hotspur, 257; Al-Ain, 244; Rangers, 227; Borussia Dortmund, 218; FC Basel, 205; Flamengo, 189; Olympiacos, 161; Atletico Madrid, 132.
