One Goal In Mind
When the Green Flag signals the start of the prestigious SCORE Baja 1000, Friday, November 9, in Ensenada, Mexico, the top-ranked team of Brian Collins and Larry Ragland will have one goal in mind - to win this highly coveted event.
Piloting the No. 12 BJC Commercial Investments/BFGoodrich-sponsored Chevy Silverado Trophy Truck, Collins and Ragland will share driving, with Collins handling the first half and Ragland taking the second leg.
"The experience and skill that Larry brings to our team is invaluable," says Collins. "He always does an incredible job and having him aboard definitely increases our chances of winning. We've been friends for a long time and I really feel lucky to have him co-drive with me. We raced together in the recent Vegas to Reno race and took second. This time we would like to make it a first place finish.
Covering approximately 700 miles of spectacular rugged terrain, this season's Baja 1000 will follow a course that has not been raced on in a number of years. Thundering off the Ensenada Startline competitors will have a total of 29 hours to complete the grueling event. "If we don't have any problems, we should be able to complete the run in about 15 hours," says Collins. "Our Chevy truck is definitely fast and the crew has it hooked up to perfection. All we need is a little luck and we will be set."
Currently ranked third in the SCORE Desert Series points, a victory could skyrocket Collins into first place in this year's championship. "There is no way to predict the outcome of an off-road race," continues Collins. "You can have the best vehicle in the world and end up out of the race. Not only are you battling a full field of vehicles, but you are also fighting Mother Nature and that is always an unknown factor."
The only thing that is for sure is that the Collins Motorsports' crew is prepared to tackle any problems that occur during this granddaddy of all off-road races. "We definitely have one of the best crews in all of racing," says Collins. "If there is a way to keep us running, they will. They never give up and are totally dedicated to winning."
"This should be a really good race," says Ragland, who has won the Baja 1000 a multitude of times. "The BJC Commercial Investments/BFGoodrich Chevy Silverado is one of the most outstanding trucks I have ever driven. We are definitely ready for this one."
Two excellent drivers, a dedicated crew, one tough truck, BF Goodrich tires and Hydra-Matic transmissions all add up to make this team a favorite to win this year's Baja 1000.
