Volkswagen youngster Williams wins as guest entrant in the USA
Wolfsburg (28 September 2008). Shane Williams made a brilliant showing as a guest entrant in the Jetta TDI Cup, the first one-make cup in the USA that exclusively relies on ultra-modern diesel technology. The runner-up in the German ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup standings won Saturday's race of the sixth round staged on the city street circuit of New Jersey (U.S. state of Pennsylvania). In the second race on Sunday the 21-year-old finished in eleventh place.
"I congratulate Shane on his exploit. In a vehicle and on a circuit that were both new to him he showed a strong performance, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Such experiences in the student exchange are important and certainly very motivating for the title fight in Germany. Trailing Cup leader Alexander Rambow with a four-point gap before the finale at Hockenheim, Williams, who in the 2008 season was on the podium of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup as many as five times, still has excellent chances of winning the title.
As "half-time champion of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, the South African, who was born in Cape Town, secured the coveted ticket for a slot as a guest entrant in America. Within an extremely short period of time the 21-year-old got accustomed to the 170-hp Jetta TDI developed by Volkswagen Motorsport in Germany. "The Jetta TDI is easy to drive. I immediately felt comfortable in the cockpit, managed to secure the pole position for the first race and, of course, Im happy about victory. In the second race I made up a few places after having started from position nine but then I evaded a spinning vehicle, got off the track and lost many places, said Shane Williams. "I gained a lot of important experience, not only on the race track. Volkswagen arranged a nice programme for me with visits to New York and Atlantic City so that I was able to see a lot of the country and people as well.
The exchange programme for young drivers has become a tradition with Volkswagen. In addition to the student exchange with the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, "foreign practice programmes have been established in the one-make cups in China, Japan and South Africa. Maximilian Sandritter, as the "rookie half-time champion of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup, successfully contested the Japanese Volkswagen GTI Cup, the junior driver who showed the best PR effort on his own behalf will compete in a race in China. The winners of the overall and the rookie classifications will race in the South African Polo Cup. During the season, reciprocal visits by the partner series in the German cup are taking place as well.
