Caleb Kenney Takes Top-10 from New Jersey Weekend
MILLVILLE, New Jersey -- This past weekend, Caleb Kenney, driving the #39 GoPro Volkswagen Jetta TDI, took another Top-10 finish from the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The weekend was held in both wet and dr conditions due to inconsistent weather patterns from tropical storm Kyle.
On Friday, one practice and two separate qualifying rounds marked the driving s hedule for all of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup drivers. Kenney was fourth in pr ctice and, again, fourth in the first qualifying round. Both rounds were held i wet conditions, favoring drivers who were comfortable in unfavorable weather. Kenney gambled on tire choice for the second qualifyinground, which was held in dry conditions. His gamble did not pay off and Kenney ualified 13th for the Round 7 race on Sunday.
"I felt great in the rain. The #39 GoPro Volkswagen Jetta TDI was really plante and gave me a lot of confidence, which was a big help going fast in the trying conditions. I gambled on tires thinking that the track would be damp for second qualifying. But it didn't pay off because the track dried a lot faster then all of us thought," commented Kenney after Friday's festivities were completed.
On Saturday's Round 6 race, Kenney started fourth and was running solidly in th Top-5 when a small mistake from himself and two other drivers ended his day ea ly. On the exit of turn 6, the car in front and directly behind him went off tr ck. While breaking for turn 7, Kenney was stuck by the following car and pushed into a tire barrier. A broken radiator meant that Kenney only finished 17 of th 19 laps in the Round 6 Race.
Damp conditions were prevalent for Sunday's Round 7 race. The SCCA decided that a single file rolling start would replace the staggered standing start due to d ffering amounts of water in each starting box. The race was caution filled and nly hadfive green flag laps. Kenney drove clean the entire race and finished 10th, his sixth Top-10 finish in only 7 races.
"A Top-10 finish feels great after my first DNF of the season. I really have to thank all of the members of the Volkswagen mechanical staff for getting my car epaired in time. I wish that Sunday's race had more green flag laps, but we hav a timed race and the SCCA made the right calls to keep all of the drivers safe" commented Caleb Kenney.
With his only DNF of the season, Kenney falls from 6th to 9th in the points sta dings heading into the Road Atlanta finale. Supporting the American Le Mans Ser es and it's Petit Le Mans weekend, the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup will compl te its inaugural season Saturday, October 4th.
