(June 29, 2001) Qualifying in Round 5 of the BFGoodrich Tires Cup SCCA Trans-Am Series initiated late this afternoon at the Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio. The session was divided into two groups, based on the current point standings. This allowed Stu Hayner (Yorba Linda, CA) and the Soenen Motorsports Team to qualify in the first of the two sessions, with the majority of the quicker Trans Am cars in the field.

During the morning practice session, Hayner piloted the #58 Trenton Forging/Soenen Motorsports Cobra Mustang to a notable 4th place. While lap times were impressive, in the 1:15 second range, it was only the beginning of a very gratifying day by Stu and the team. The morning practice was a 45-minute session, followed by qualifying at 6:30 pm, another 45-minute session.

Stu was the first of the group to get onto the track. Immediately, the car was running in the low 1:15 second range, placing Hayner, in the #58, at the top of the qualifying session. Mid-session, Paul Gentilozzi posted a 1:13.3, placing him on the pole position, which he would ultimately hold on to. A few other cars were able to outrun the #58 entry, but not by much. Hayner placed the Trenton Forging/Soenen Motorsports Ford Mustang #58, in 7th place with a 1:14.5, for tomorrows running of the Trans Am Series 100.

Green flag will drop at 4:45 for the Marconi Grand Prix of Cleveland, Trans Am Series 100. This event is the second in a series of three to be broadcast on CBS Sports, and may be seen Sunday, July 1, at 3:30 pm.
