LAKEVILLE, CONN. (July 3, 2004) -Marc Walker, of Oldsmar, Fla., won Round Five of the SCCA Sportscar Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, at Lime Rock Park. Completing the top-three is Neil Tilbor, of New Smyrna, Fla. and Robert Mumm, of Hales Corner, Wisc.
Racing in conjunction with the American Le Mans Series, Walker led the field to the green flag, after capturing the pole position earlier in the day. Holding off a hard charging Tilbor at the start, Walker maintained the lead into big bend turn. Displaying the speed he showed in pre-event testing, Walker began pull away from Tilbor, in the No. 8 Team Edge R/C SCCA Sportscar. Driving fast consistent laps, Walker had built a lead of over 10 seconds by the midway point of the race. At the checkered flag, Walker, in the No. 9 Comprent Motorsports Lola Sports 2000, had captured his first career SCCA Sportscar Championship, lapping both Tilbor and Mumm, in the No. 10 Autostuff Inc. SCCA Sportscar.
"It's still a real competitive car," said Walker, who finished third in the season-opener at Road Atlanta. "Neil [Tilbor] got a good jump at the start, but I was able to hold him off. Once in front, I drove my own race and tried to run consistent fast laps. I'm looking forward to race two on Monday."
