World Challenge competitors to assault Summit Point 12-Hour.

21May2002: The Washington DC Region of the SCCA announced today that at least three regular competitors from the Speed World Challenge Touring Car series would be competing in the 4th Annual Kumho Tires 12 Hours at the Point. duPont Motorsport's Neal Sapp and Alfred duPont and Metro Volkswagen's Rob Hines have entered the May 31-June 1 event that will be held on two-mile Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, West Virginia. Currently, fifty-five cars, the maximum allowed, will attempt the grueling 12-hour race.

Sapp and duPont will be paired with Gerry Walsh in the Otto's BMW car. The car, a BMW 325 in the ITE Class, is one of duPont Motorsport's Speed World Challenge Touring Cars. "The endurance format is very different from the sprints we run in the Speed World Challenge but the preparation needed might be greater," said duPont. duPont added, "The length of the race, 12 hours, will require more strategy than the sprints we run in the Speed World Challenge. Pit stops and fuel economy will play an important part of this race."

Rob Hines, past SCCA National T2 Champion, will team with Kevin Wesley Stan Mahr, Rudy Consolacion in the Kumho Tire/Cross Pens Empire Resources Motorsports Plymouth Neon. The car, competing in Showroom Stock C, is part of a two-car effort. According to Hines, "We won't get the overall victory, but I think we have a good shot for the class win."

The 4th Annual Kumho Tires 12 Hours at the Point is a spectator race. Gates open at noon on Friday and 8AM on Saturday. Spectator information can be found at www.12hoursatthepoint.org
