Inaugural Devil In The Dark 12 Hour Race At New Jersey Motorsports Park, June 19, 2010
Sports Car Teams to Contest for Historic Endurance Race as the Jersey Devil Himself Lurks in the Nearby Forest
Millville NJ (June 11, 2010) On Saturday June 19, New Jersey Motorsports Park will host the Inaugural "Devil" After Dark 12 Hour Endurance Race for Sports Car Race teams on the challenging 2.25 mile Thunderbolt Raceway. Conducted under the auspices of the South Jersey Region of the Sports Car Club of America, these teams will participate in a medley of different classes that will take the green flag at high noon and continue to battle over the next 12 hours finishing at the crack of midnight. Pit stops for refueling and driver changes will take place at strategic intervals. Surely the Jersey Devil himself will find the perfect location in the adjacent pine woods to observe this historic moment in New Jersey.
According to SCCA Regional official J.D. King, "Our Club is thrilled to have the opportunity to present this historic motorsports event at such a magnificent racing facility. It picks up the tradition of endurance racing going back to the 4 hour contests at the1.5 mile Vineland Speedway in the early 60s. Quite a few of those Vineland competitors went on to racing greatness such as Roger Penske, Mark Donohue and Peter Revson. We feel that many of the younger drivers in this historic 12 Hour Devil in the Dark can be expected to move upward with their racing careers in the years to come."
King continued, "it should be noted that in endurance racing, the most powerful racers do not necessarily win. To win you must finish, and very often the less powerful production cars finish higher than the out and out purpose built racers. We see this every year at Daytona and Sebring. This is the beauty and challenge of this form of motor racing."
NJMP Director of Motorsports Activities, and accomplished sports car racer, Joe Volpe said, "The naming of this inaugural race recognizes the mythical beast whose contorted shape is closely replicated in the most challenging "Jersey Devil" unique series of seven turns leading up to the lightning fast sweeper under the bridge and onto the main straightaway. The 2.25 the long mile Thunderbolt Raceway upon which this race will take place lies nestled deep in the heavily forested pinelands riverine range of this legendary creature.
More than a few of NJMP's thousands of visitors have pondered what strange creatures may inhabit the nearby swamps, meadows, rivers and forests. Could the Jersey Devil be real after all? And if so, is it still lurking out there just beyond the roar of speeding racecars and the festival atmosphere of this extraordinary motorsports showplace? We know that many new wild animal species have learned to live in harmony with humanity without ever being seen. They are being discovered by the hundreds every year. Why not one more?
