Goodyear-Shod Teams Win Six of Eight in Runoffs Opener
LEXINGTON, Ohio (Sept. 24, 2004) -- Six teams using Goodyear tires won in eight races during Friday's first day of the 2004 Sports Car Club of America National Championship Runoffs presented by Kohler at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Of the 24 podium finishers, 14 used Goodyear tires to get there and Goodyear drivers took all three podium positions three times. "The Goodyear tires were right on, they were ready to stick immediately," said John Heinricy, the winner of the Touring 1 championship.
Friday's winning drivers on Goodyear tires included Doug Peterson (Rescue, Calif.) in GT5, David Finch (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in GT2, Tom Feller (Clarkston, Mich.) in H Production, John Saurino (Tulsa, OK) in F Production, another Doug Peterson (Bonita Springs, Fla.) in Formula Mazda and Heinricy (Holly, Mich.). Heinricy won the Touring 1 title for the fourth straight year, driving a Chevrolet Corvette. Racing on Goodyear DOT radial tires, Heinricy has led every lap of each Touring 1 race at the Runoffs since 2001.
"Goodyear has built a heck of a tire," Heinricy said. "It runs quick and it stays with you the whole time."
Heinricy was one of the 13 Goodyear-equipped drivers to start on the pole at this year's Runoffs. Finch and Peterson also started on the pole and won Friday.
Goodyear has won 41 of 69 races in classes open to competition among tiremakers in the last three Runoffs. That includes the 15 victories the tiremaker grabbed in 2003.
Two days and 16 races remain in amateur sports car racing's fall classic.
