Mueller Motorsports opens 2010 with win and track record at Blackhawk Farms
SOUTH BELOIT, IL. (May 2, 2010) - Mueller Motorsports opened the 2010 racing season with a victory in race #2 of the SCCA Blackhawk/Milwaukee Double National at Blackhawk Farms Raceway this past weekend. On the way to the race win, driver Michael Mueller also reset his own Formula 500 track record with a lap of 1:12.434.
Following a damp morning qualifying session, Mueller started his HRP powered Red Devil from third position behind Steve Jondal and Bob Giesen. At the start of the second lap Mueller passed Giesen exiting turn one and then a few corners later made a late braking pass on Jondal for the lead. The early laps of the race saw Mueller open up a gap to the field while they raced for second. Eventually Aaron Ellis took charge of the spot and began to close the gap to the lead as the field worked through Formula Vee traffic.
Once clear of the traffic Mueller put together a series of quick times, including the lap that reset the track record, to pull away to a more comfortable margin. From that point on it was clear sailing to the win, 8.405 seconds ahead of the eleven-car field. This victory marked the second ever SCCA National race win for Mueller Motorsports.
Sunday's victory and track record was a welcome result after the disappointment of race #1 on Saturday. Starting race #1 from pole position, Mueller quickly opened up a substantial gap to the rest of the field, nearly 12 seconds by the mid-point of the race. With the victory well in hand and only 8 laps left, a sudden electrical problem forced Michael to retire to the pit lane and hand over the race lead to eventual winner Aaron Ellis.
Despite the unfortunate result of race #1, the win and track record in race #2 allowed the team to leave the weekend happy and with positive momentum to carry into the rest of the season. The next race for Mueller Motorsports will be the SCCA Milwaukee Region CAT Doubleheader National event at Road America on May 21-23.
