Runoffs Notes - 30 - Sunday copyright 1996 John P. M. Dillon
Top 3 finishers plus 5th in T1 were disqualified for illegal heads. AS winner Kelso is under protest by Scott Oleson. Contact between the two cars caused Oleson to spin out of the lead.
Provisional EP Finishers: John Baucom, Bob Boig, Vic Skirmants All three drivers running Goodyears, Boig uses Redline, the other two use Valvoline.
Interviews ========== Skirmants: Real happy to be here, considering we broke an exhaust during the race.
Boig: Battled for second with Mark Brannon. That was a heartbreak for Mark, we had a fun time. Little rubbing of fiberglass, but I got by, figured we'd race again near the end, but I heard his fuel pump died at the end. Lot of fun with Vic in that group at the end. You could've covered us three with a blanket. I watched Vic in the GP race yesterday, learned his defensive line.
Skirmants: That's my normal line!
Baucum: It was pretty easy once I got in front. Today's my wife's birthday, we've only been married for two months. Haven't seen her since!
Are you going to run same cars next year? All three said "Yep, sure, of course."
What about the "class consolidation initiative" that's being discussed?
Boig: The intention is not to take away any racing spots, we're just changing the letters on the side of the cars.
Skirmants: I'm on the competition board. Some people are real concerned about threats to Production, and it's true that some people want to kill it, but I'd like to see it go on, and I'll fight to the end for it. We've got a lot of cars like 240Z's and Mazda RX7's that would be great for D Production.
Boig: We've got to use our heads, listen to what members want to race. Remember, we're a sports car club--we need to race sports cars. The members of the club, they've got to write letters, for or against. No letters, no club. I'm on ad hoc committee that reports to Vic.
Skirmants: every letter gets looked at and discussed.
Baucom's dad Gary, who's raced many times at the Runoffs, forfeited his run this week to make John's car better. It's better to focus on one car and make it really strong than to run two cars, making each of them not as competitive.
Skirmants: track was cold in second qualifying, about two seconds slower than normal.
It was reported that Headly suffered water in the fuel, which took him out.
Pratt Cole blew his transmsission, Skirmants said due to missed shift.
