SCCA driver fatality; George L. Smith involved in single-car incident at Lime Rock Park

TOPEKA, Kan. (June 16, 2002) -- George L. Smith, 68, of Troy, N.Y., was pronounced dead Saturday at Sharon Hospital (Sharon, Conn.) following a single-car incident at Lime Rock Park during a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA)-sanctioned Club Racing Regional event. The cause of death is pending outcome of the autopsy.

Smith's GT-1 class car failed to navigate the corner known as the "Uphill" at the 1.53-mile Lime Rock Park road course in Lakeville, Conn. A medical condition is not being ruled out as the cause of the accident.

Smith was a veteran racer, first earning his SCCA competition license in the early 1970s. Through the next three-plus decades, he competed in American Sedan, formula, production and GT category classes and made two starts in the Trans-Am Series in 1989.

Smith is survived by wife Karen and his three children.
